Durbin, No. 2 Senate Democrat, to Retire After 44 Years in Congress

Source: NYT

By Carl Hulse
Reporting from Washington
April 23, 2025

Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat for two decades and a leading liberal voice on Capitol Hill, will not seek re-election next year, closing out a 44-year congressional career focused on immigration, the federal justice system and anti-smoking initiatives.

The decision to be announced on Wednesday by Mr. Durbin, 80, was widely expected and will immediately touch off a crowded competition for a rare Senate vacancy in his solidly blue state. It also intensifies a generational shift in the chamber as he becomes the fifth sitting senator to announce a retirement, all of them over the age of 65.

In an interview revealing his plans, Mr. Durbin, who is in his fifth Senate term, said it was not an easy choice to step away from his prime perch doing battle with President Trump, whom he considers a dire threat to democracy. He described moments in recent days “where I thought, ‘Man, I don’t want to miss this fight.’”

“But you know,” he continued, “I have to be honest about this. There are good people in the wings, good people on the bench ready to serve, and they can fight this fight just as effectively as I can. There comes a point where you have to face reality that this is the time to leave for me.”

Durbin served Illinois well for decades but he backed the losing, now full MAGA mayoral candidate in Chicago’s last election. I wouldn’t have voted for him anyway. I hope we get a good replacement.

He has demonstrated he is not intimidated by Team Trump and he has no patience for fools and grifters like the Heritage Foundation.

He also has enough money and integrity that I don't think donors will corrupt or compromise him.

I feel like the seat's pretty reliably Dem (Chicago exists) so I'm not concerned if he takes a pass. Being a Senator seems like it sucks.

She was a good representative for the 17th district. Also, she was mentored by Durbin. It could help that she is from the
Quad Cities, not Chicago. Many downstaters resent Chicagoans and think they have too much say in the state.

Voluntarily did not run for her House seat again but left her district in good hands.

She has shown interest in the past. I can only hope she is still interested.

Certainly wouldn't surprise anyone to see Durbin endorse her.

He is the first gay person to represent the district. Sorensen is a retired television meteorologist. My son is a weather geek and a storm chaser. He is friends with Eric.

but it's about fucking time!
When you hit 75, you should retire.
I'm 65 and I am retired.
I don't want the generation before me in charge anymore.
go ahead, hide my post but these 80 year olds need to go home.
How are we ever going to have a democracy if you politicians never fucking go home.
Go away.

In 1992, I was working for North Point Aviation at Mt Hawley Airport in Peoria, IL when a Beech King Air flew in. I walked up to the hatch, swung it down and down walks Sen Paul Simon (the Paul Simon with the bow tie ) and senate candidate Carol Moseley-Braun. Shook their hands, chatted, etc. This was before Sen Durbin. Nice visit!

The only politician I've ever met is the congressman whose campaign I worked on, sure wish we had him now!

(Unless, of course, I count President Clinton...)

My Dad, on the other hand, got to know Shirley Chisholm and Nelson Rockefeller. He became a lifelong admirer of Shirley Chisholm.

But these days I'd prefer George Bush* (who wrote a letter of support to Liz Cheney when she was serving on the January 6th Committee) to what we've got now - or, as my camp friends and I agreed, the next person who drives by.

Tammy Duckworth's website declared she would vote against it, but Durbin's did not specify so I called his office.

I got a recording, and left a message urging him to vote against it. He sided with Shumer, voting FOR the measure.

I know opinions here were divided, but there were unacceptable poison pills in that bill. Essentially powerless, Democrats had to make whatever stand they could against Congress allowing The Felon to impose tariffs at will and tear apart government agencies.

Other than that, I have no complaints against Dick Durbin. He's been a good Democratic senator. It will be interesting to see who succeeds him.
