(23,044 posts)This is all like something out of a third-world banana republic - starting with Snoozalini himself.
I would remind any Trumpkin who still applauds Needy Amin, that such regimes usually end in a national economic collapse - which doesn't take long to follow the moral one.
That's if one could (as you know - 9 times out of 10, pointing that out would immediately degenerate into a shouting match)

(4,760 posts)It isn't clear how many people have been deported, let alone how many have committed any crime. But estimates are from 300-500,000. This is comparable to deportations under President Biden.
Of course it can be taken for granted that under President Trump the amount of money stolen and wasted from the 170 billion will be orders of magnitude greater than under President Biden.
And of course the levrl of chaos and fear haven't been seen since since Operation Wetback under President Eisenhower.
But it seems to me that they are preparing the ground for something bigger.

(23,044 posts)Fascists, as you know, typically play for keeps - especially a gangster like Cheeto.
And the GOP - the only major party in the first world to meet all 14 criteria for fascism - has been laying the ground work for this since Dubya if not earlier.

(4,760 posts)I would say that this authoritarian ploy has been a century in the making. I know that when I was growing up in Amarillo Texas I heard the majority of the principles that maga voices, "said out loud" frequently.
From the techbros and corporations to the evilgelicals to reich-wing politicians and their base I have a very bad feeling. I worry that the one third of the electorate who are just beginning to wake up and vote will roll over and play dead if it becomes obvious that the authoritarian Republican party is in total control. Already we are well down the way from democracy to electoral autocracy.

(23,044 posts)I couldn't help but notice the Mississippi plates on the first car the brothers tracked.
Having grown up there, I can definitely attest to the devout fascism professed by at least half the white voters there.
Somewhat suppressed in the post-Civil Rights era, this sentiment really took off again after Old Man Bush (who despised Southerners) was defeated by Clinton (who is one - but which in their eyes made him a traitor).
It was a real shock to them - and they were sure it was part of some "Jew conspiracy."
There isn't much Cheeto and his regime are doing, that doesn't recall at least one conversation in my teens with a Mi'ssippi right-winger.
Right down to the McCarthy and Hitler apologia - and of course a real bloodlust, when it came to "lib'ruls" and "faw'ners."
