Like we did last time, and focus on rebuilding and instituting progressive policies?
Or is it necessary to rip the poison vines of the criminal syndicate out of our institutions by its roots, in both its personal and digital forms as a priority before anything else can be done?

(18,017 posts)Wink! Wink!!!
I want all of the assholes who have caused this to be put behind bars and I don't want them getting off because of some "technicality". So, I really don't care how that happens as long as it's "legal", of course.

(24,623 posts)Look forward to restoring lost rights and repairing the damage and destruction of the Trump era by killing the filibuster and expanding the court, but never forget how we got here or who was responsible.

(35,099 posts)...to seeing Trump (if he lasts that long) and all of these other assholes in orange jumpsuits getting frog-marched off to prison. If that doesn't happen, then there's no point in this country continuing to exist.

(24,623 posts)Especially for Trump seeing Justice.
But I think, if enough courageous democrats are elected who will kill the filibuster, expand the court, and Ram through law after law to make sure another administration like Trumps can never happen again, then there is very much indeed a point to the continued existence of the USA.

(674 posts)None of that will ensure that another Trump wouldn't happen, and removing the filibuster and expanding the court will just ensure that the next Trump will have no obstacles to doing whatever they want when they expand the court in their favor as well.
Breaking two branches of government doesn't protect anything and is incredibly short sighted.

(24,623 posts)Your path ensures lost rights will never be restored and the damage and destruction of the Trump era will never be repaired.
Dems must never again govern out of fear of what republicans might do.
Now is the time for courage, not cowardice,

(674 posts)Then you live in an echo chamber.
What rights have we lost that we need a packed court to recover? Abortion? If you recall that was before 2024 and we lost when we ran on it.
Fiendish Thingy
(24,623 posts)Than maintaining politics-as-usual.
Other lost rights worth expanding the court to regain, as well as to repair the damage of the Trump era:
The entire first amendment
Due process, especially for immigrants dealing with ICE
Balance of powers/coequal branches of government - if you dont think the executive branch has grown too powerful, as well as the judicial branch
Voting rights
Campaign finance reform
LGBTQ rights (if you dont think Obergefell is next on the MAGA majoritys list
)
A safe and sane application of second amendment rights
The right to clean air and water, and a safe environment for future generations
All of the above are supported by a majority of Americans.
Are you OK with maintaining the status quo on all the above? Because that will be the result if Dems fail to kill the filibuster and expand the court in 2029.

(3,382 posts)The question is not what happens AFTER the election. The question is whom we elect.
We need to make sure every Democratic candidate running for ANY national office, and especially the Presidency, understands that shit is over. The American people have had enough of that.
I don't expect candidates to run on a vendetta tour. But I do expect them to STRONGLY support some very crucial principles, such as:
* SCOTUS must be fundamentally reformed with strict ethical accountability, unquestionable transparency, term limits, limits on legislation from the bench, and an expanded body commensurate with the complexity of today's society. And this commitment must include actively working to restore voting rights and getting corporations and their money out of our government.
* The richest individuals and corporations must pay their fair share for the benefits they get from our society
* We must prosecute all major crimes committed within our government, regardless who are the criminals
* We must hold social media accountable for the damage done by their systems, their algorithms, their robots, and their AI.
* We demand an immediate halt to the construction of AI data centers until we have laws governing the safe and transparent use of AI, including compensating artists for the theft of their IP. Any new data centers must include the carbon-neutral generation of TWICE the electricity used by the data center, with that excess going directly to the people in the form of reduced electrical rates. And a similar set of requirements for the water used by data centers.
... and so on. Maybe these aren't exactly the platform items -- I offer these by way of example. The point is that we must fight for these things BEFORE the elections, and fight AGAINST any candidates we can't trust to fight for these things. If we don't the office-holders will just blow it off later.
And by the way, lots of conservatives want these things too. If we present this agenda in the right way, we will get support all across the spectrum.

(674 posts)There are clearly things that need to be corrected, but a full scorched earth policy is going to lead to a very short time in power.

(16,123 posts)We an look forward by implementing policies for a better future, AND uphold the rule of law y holding accountale those who comitted crimes i the current administration.
In fact, that better future is likely in doubt if we fail to ensure that justice is done.
We can, and must, do both. If we don't also stand FOR something to make life better for all Americans going forward, then we have no business running the country.
