When I was a child (1972) my best friend had leukemia and was cured by St. Jude Hospital at no cost to his family.

If it's any comfort, my favorite professor at grad school had leukemia and lived with it for forty years. One of my husband's friends likewise lived decades with it. While the diagnosis is frightening, there is hope.
