In a shocking move, Australia has officially turned its back on the US to sign a massive $30B trade deal with the EU. For the 3rd time in just 3 months, a major global power has chosen Europe over America, effectively locking US firms out of nearly 845 billion dollars in contracts.

(364 posts)And Congress will have create new laws to prevent any future President from doing the unthinkable atrocities Trump comitted.

(676 posts)create such laws. It is the purview of the electorate to conduct proper vetting and voting as part of its civic duty to not nominate nor elect such vile monsters. Dont create laws when just being rational works perfectly.
However, should such a creature manage to be elected, Congress does have the right and duty to impeach and convict the president.

(16,055 posts)Trump, just in this term, has likely commited more high crimes and misdemeanors than all other presidents combined -- but he won't be removed through impeachment because there is almost zero chance of garnering 67 votes in the Senate to convict.
If candidates are elected who campaigned on reining in executive power, then the will of The People will be served by passing such laws.

(16,055 posts)Justice delayed became justice denied, with the help of SCOTUS. Now, he'll likely die before being held criminally accountable.
I would much rather he die in prison.

(23,080 posts)No offense, but your faith in voters and politicians to do the right thing is breathtakingly naive. The average American voter is rational? OK.

(676 posts)But they have to be forced to do their civic duty. Dont offload this to some laws. All these legislative ideas: term limits, age limits, no prior felonies, revealing tax returns
Now, I agree we should see the candidates tax returns. It should be part of the vetting process. Same with health information, college transcripts, etc. No different than any other job application process (ok, most jobs dont ask for health information, but almost all athletic jobs require a thorough physical).
We need to train the voters to be better hiring managers, and that goes for all elected positions, from school boards to the presidency.

(20,003 posts)one election away from a madman running the US.
There is no stability to be found in the US system, because everyone has seen that our system of "checks and balances" doesn't work when one man decides he is a dictator.
Or, maybe I should rephrase that....when a bunch of billionaire assholes decide that the country is their chew toy and they must break it and then smash all the little people in it, in order to help them feel something, anything.
Also, of all of them Mike Johnson is the most evil. He is the ONE PERSON who could initiate a change, it is supposedly his obligation to do so, but he's that cartoon of the dog sitting in a burning room saying "this is fine".

(16,055 posts)But let's remember that is precisely why his Republican cohorts in the House elected him Speaker. They are all responsible for this.
But there is plenty of blame to spread around beyond the Republican Party. The Corporate media, mega donors, and voters who are easily fooled or full of hate all made it possible for an evil destructive creature to become the President of the United States of America.
And all of us, even those who fought the good fight against this evil, will suffer the consequences.

(1,452 posts)Should be considered.
This every four year cycle is bullshit. We cant keep our heads above water long enough to do much of any substance with oligarchs and religious types effing up matters.
Our democracy as it is currently defined and/or used no longer works.

(20,003 posts)They expect Republicans to fuck everything up and Democrats to fix it.
They will give endless time to the right wing to destroy, but expect Dems to have it all fixed on day one.
And they will reward the destruction and punish the ones trying to help.
It's like Republicans are the "fun" meth-addled uncle and the Democrats are the responsible parent, just trying to keep everyone alive.

(13,488 posts)losing out on all those future F-35 sales that were going to Canada and elsewhere, now go to Sweden.
Bell and Sikorsky have lost all the helicopter sales that now go to Airbus to be built in Canada.
The Boeing AWACS is now replaced by a Swedish equivalent aircraft.
South Korea and Germany will now be the submarine supplier to Canada and Australia instead of General Dynamics Electric Boat.
It sure feels like we are losing a lot of manufacturing jobs in the expansive military hardware sector, or am I wrong?
