Not the best sources for original reporting, and many are helmed by folks who are or were frequent guests on places like CNN and MSNOW.

I prefer ProPublica, the Guardian, and the like.

You cannot tell me that you get better legal analysis on what is going on in court cases across the country that affect our Constituion and Democracy than Legal AF

Some of the worst are Brian Tyler Cohen (clickbait merchant) and Meidas Touch (outrage farmers) - they aren’t any more independent than the legacy media you disdain, they just have different agendas and masters.

Marc Elias of Democracy Docket is a frequent guest on MSNOW, as are some of the other folks from sources on your list.

In many, but not all cases, these so-called “independent” News sources prioritize clicks and engagement over informing their audiences- that’s how they stay in business, and we should never forget they are businesses just like the big legacy media outlets.

Legal AF is a fine source for information and analysis of legislative and court related news; so are LawFare, emptywheel and the Strict Scrutiny podcast, which also features legal experts who are frequent guests on MSNOW.

I think it is dangerous to reject all legacy media sources out of hand, and may even be more dangerous to blindly accept “independent” News sources are preferable over legacy media, especially since those lines are becoming increasingly blurred.

but I disagree with you on Bryan Taylor Cohen.

I find your defense of Legacy Media suspect. We need to support independent media because it really is all we have to turn to right now.

Meidas Touch is the worst! I don't want liberal bias, I want accurate reporting. The Guardian is excellent and it doesn't make you watch 20 minutes of clickbait to get five minutes' worth of information. If you want in-depth, objective analysis, Pro Publica does a fine job. Atlantic and Harper's are also very good.

but there are also other independent reporters on his channel including Michael Popok, Harry Litman, Scott MacFarlane, Adam Mokler, Katie Phang , and many others.

Also Ken Harbaugh, he is great with his news from Ukraine and other military news.

It is a great channel for independent news

Maybe more people would tune in if his videos looked like serious work and not like the cover of the National Enquirer. Better yet, forget the videos and write stuff. I read a lot faster than I can watch a video, and I can skip material that wastes my time. But you don't get all those likes and clicks from writing, I guess.

I am familiar with Substack. There are some good writers, many of whom let you read part of their piece and then want you to pay for a subscription to read the rest. I get that they don't want to work for free but I find the bait and switch irritating; just call it a paywall up front.

They have to pay their bills. You watch tv and see advertisements. I have about 5 subscriptions to the ones I really love. It costs me about 8 dollars a month to support them. I am willing to do that for their content. We cannot support legacy media. They have been corrupted. Or at least I can't, I didn't mean to speak for you.

That is a good choice as well as The Guardian.

As far as TV news there is a story selection & often a perspective bias especially when it relates to foreign policy and it can be hard to trust when most of our media is owned by right wing billionaires.

I do go to Youtube and I think I found some good sources like Taylor Lorenz who used to work for The Washington Post. She does some original reporting on her videos. There are a lot from CNN or MSNow that are on Youtube but I think that shows the problem with the direction corporate media is heading and it is better for Independent media to have their experience on their platforms. I think Mehdi Hasan is doing great things with Zeteo who I also subscribe to.

... as well as the ones who spend 12 minutes reading a 2-minute press release, then reading it again and summarizing it, then analyzing it, then looping back to re-analyze it... all to make their video long enough to have a mid-roll ad inserted.

The big yellow arrows, the bright Impact font, the extra exclamation points, or use AI enhanced thumbnails that turn Betteridge's law of headlines into a pure art form

Key Concept The Rule: "Any headline that ends in a question mark can be answered by the word no."
The Purpose: Journalists and questionable content creators use question headlines when they lack enough facts to make an actual assertion, but still want a sensational title to attract clicks.

In my view the problems with America are the billionaires. They own mainstream media networks and as such only report on things that they feel will benefit them. The billionaires have bribed the conservative SCOTUS jurors to side with them on things like Citizens United where billionaires can give unlimited amounts to conservatives, anonymously, but the rest of us are severely limited in what we can give and must disclose who we are. The billionaires give excessive amounts (bribes) to politicians to reduce only their taxes while requiring those politicians to give them massive amounts of taxpayer money to enhance their personal wealth To compensate for this they bribe politicians like Trump to allow them to fire tens of thousands of Americans, to cut our Pensions (Social Security) and medical insurance (Medicare and medicare) all of which Trump promised not to cut and which funds come out of the highest taxes most people pay, FICA taxes.. They bribe politicians to start wars so they can profit off weapons supplies and reconstruction efforts after the war. They bribe politicians to destroy our commons and then give the billionaires even more tax money to rebuild what they've destroyed at many times more than the actual costs. The billionaires have bribed those running the justice system to create an unjust nation that only benefits them.

The American billionaires have destroyed our republic because they admire and are trying to create. a Russian-type Oligarchy here in America. Don't just avoid mainstream media, avoid and resist everything billionaires tell us we need. Clean up their criminal and inept behavior and cleanse this country of the extreme corruption, mostly from Republicans across all three branches of government, law enforcement, Justice, media, sports and more.

Billionaires are the problem.

Fri Jun 26, 2026, 11:12 AM

Reign it in by:
1. Impeaching jurists, especially on SCOTUS, who have taken millions in bribes to rule in favor of billionaires
2. Raise taxes massively on billionaire
3. Pass legislation overturning Citizens United and ban all dark money
4. Break up the monopolies and rescind all the waivers for corporations who have been allowed to skirt the laws forbidding them from owning too much of one industry

I like to say prosecute billionaires who have committed fraud, but Trump has pardoned dozens of these people who were convicted which tells me we should not vote for any Republican.

Thanks for the welcome. Glad to be here.

I keep getting suggestions to subscribe to the 1440 newsletter, I am wary of any site claiming to be completely unbiased. I don’t want to give them any clicks if they are just another right wing garbage site. Does anyone have any information on1440?
