Perspective please

A friend once confided in me that her husband was sending sexy messages to women online. I did not run to his employer and tell the employer about the man's messages. My friend trusted me. Subsequent discussions with my friend revealed they had gone for marriage counseling and individual counseling to work things out the best they could. That was a few years ago and they worked it out as many couples do.

As far as I know, none of the women Platner communicated with were under age. None were forced against their will. This appears to be a modern problem that is cropping up in many marriages now. Isn't it how they manage it the key here?

Susan Collins did not protect a woman's bodily autonomy, leaving the states to enact draconian laws that practically put pregnant women under the control of the state. Some have died. We all know she was concerned though.

Susan Collins has lived a life much different than the rest of us. Her political ambitions from an early age left little room for mistakes. Her family's political connections greased the wheels for her rise. She is 73 now and would like to keep her seat until she is 79.

Platner has lived a life that is familiar to many. He went to war, suffered PTSD and worked through it, owns a small business, and started a marriage at 38. This is a life that has room for mistakes and learning from them.

I will take someone who lives in the real world and does the work over a pampered princess any day.

2. And...

There are two other candidates running for the same office who have actual experience that I would prefer my Senator have. And Mills is still on the ballot, bet she gets a lot more votes than some expect.

As Platner Faces Controversy in Maine, Mills Notes, ‘I Am Still on the Ballot’

Gov. Janet Mills of Maine, who bowed out of the state’s Senate race a month ago, suggested in a new interview that she remained an option for Democratic voters as Graham Platner, the party’s likely nominee, faced scrutiny over reports that he had sent sexual messages to women outside his marriage.

“People have the impression that I ‘withdrew’ or ‘dropped out,’” Ms. Mills said in an interview published on Monday in The Portland Press Herald. “I simply suspended active campaigning. I am still on the ballot.”

Ms. Mills delivered her assessment to Steve Collins, a columnist at the newspaper, Maine’s largest.

Her comments came amid the latest political firestorm for Mr. Platner, 41, an oyster farmer and first-time political candidate who has galvanized progressives. His momentum drove Ms. Mills, 78, a two-term governor who had been endorsed by Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader, from the race in late April.

The latest furor involving Mr. Platner involves an admission that he had sent sexually explicit texts to as many as six women since he was married in 2023. His campaign previously survived uproars over a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol (he has since had it covered up) and inflammatory old Reddit posts.

to run by the status quo Democrats. She is 78 and if elected will be 84 at the end of her term. I hope she does not siphon off votes that will keep Collins in office. She will not go into office talking about stagnant waged, lack of healthcare, closing hospitals etc. She will play by the same rules as Chuck Schumer and keep everything collegiate.

Platner got an skull and crossbones tattoo in Croatia with a bunch of Marines who got the same one. It's a good bet they had been drinking. It was meant to be a kick ass tattoo, not a Nazi one. He had it covered up when he was informed about the Nazi connection. He has said his Jewish relatives must have seen his tattoo and never said anything about it. He is under attack from Republicans and Democrats and the media is playing along.

Is his only track record, weak tea at best.

Costello and Mills both have experience and that is what we need right now at any age. There is still over a week of early voting and with ranked choice, platner might not be as popular as some think.

I am hopefully awaiting the count in two weeks, that will be the answer no matter what anyone on DU wants.

4. Unless your friend's employer was our government, and her husband

was a governing public official, the two situations are not related. Was your friend's husband a rape apologist who will be in a position to be making decisions on women's lives? If not, the two situations are not related.

Is platner liviing a life familiar to many of us? If our parents are upper class, if we went to private schools, if our father loaned us the money to buy our house, if our mother is apparently the sole customer of our business, yes. Did he go to war? Yes. Is he dealing with PTSD? According to the VA, yes. Is he recently married? Yes. Is it possible he is learning from his mistakes? Yes.

For ALL our sakes, I truly hope that those who support him are the ones who are correct.
