The House had 231 days of vacations, breaks, holidays and Senate had 198 days off.
They spend millions to get this job and all its perks

A lot of the Congress members are attorneys so they get side jobs. The millionaire Senators work on their investment portfolio.

They spend half their time at Congress. Other half is back in their home state to do townhalls, work with their staff, research stuff, etc. You want them to spend a lot of time at home where they represent.
