MI-GOV: Michigan teachers union deadlocked on governor's race
Lansing Michigan's largest teacher union announced Tuesday that it's currently unable to recommend a candidate to be the state's next governor.
The Michigan Education Association's Statewide Screening and Recommendation Committee considered Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, independent former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and Democratic Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. But the panel couldn't reach a majority decision.
It may reconvene at a later date, according to a press release from the union.
The MEA represents about 120,000 teachers, education support professionals and higher-education employees throughout the state, according to its website. The group tends to back Democratic candidates, like they did in 2018 for Gretchen Whitmer's first bid for governor.
