VATICAN CITY, May 5 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expects a "frank" meeting with Pope Leo during a visit to the Vatican on Thursday, the U.S. ambassador said, after President Donald Trump took a fresh pot-shot at the pope for criticising the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran.
"Nations have disagreements, and I think one of the ways that you work through those is ... through fraternity and authentic dialogue," Brian Burch, the U.S. ambassador to the Holy See, said on Tuesday.
"I think the Secretary is coming here in that spirit," Burch told journalists. "To have a frank conversation about U.S. policy, to engage in dialogue."
Trump has repeatedly disparaged the first U.S.-born pope in recent weeks, drawing a backlash from Christian leaders across the political spectrum.

(1,634 posts)Im surprised the Pope even gives them the time of day. The Catholic Church for better or worse will be around long after the orange pig has gone to ground.

Rubio hasn't quite stepped over the line when it comes to Church Doctrine, even though he skirts close.
As an Augustine Scholar, the Pope might think he can do a bit to redeem Rubio and maybe some of the US policy. I think he's probably wrong (the Pope isn't a Jesuite and Rubio is not Taunhausser) but hey, he's trying.
