An ex-MAGA supporter says people need to welcome those leaving the movement or they'll stay in the cult. The response to that take is exactly as sharp as it needs to be. Leaving Trump is not the finish line. It is barely the starting line.

Leaving MAGA does not automatically make someone an ally. If you stopped supporting Trump but kept voting for every elected official enabling him, you have not left the movement you have just stopped wearing the hat. The work of unlearning what made it acceptable to support him in the first place is entirely separate from simply walking away when his poll numbers dropped. The deal breakers were there in 2015. They were there on Access Hollywood tape day. They were there on January 7th. A decade later, after he can no longer run, is not the moment that earns you a standing ovation from the people who saw it clearly the entire time.

(3,946 posts)over our elected government, and the world's governments at large. And they must admit that Citizens United was a huge mistake that must be overturned. Money is NOT SPEECH, and corporations are NOT people. And not all "regulations" that make life better for the public generally are bad.
The billionaires are trying to take over the world, and steal EVERYONE'S money. They want to make our elected government subservient and powerless to stop them from raping and pillaging the world.
"Government" has it's faults, but these people need to show me a fundamental shift in thinking on this particular subject, again AT A MINIMUM. Otherwise, they still don't get it, and I have no use for an alliance with them because they're simply always going to be at cross purposes with what is most important. IMHO, the worlds biggest problem "billionaires blatantly corrupting government to serve their own interests, and nobody stopping them".
Eventually the world will be outright ruled by billionaires if this trend continues. This is the most existential crisis we have, and so many OTHER problems flow from it (including not doing nearly enough to fight climate change, and countless other problems that stem from the rich having control over EVERYTHING). They need to understand the billionaires WANT us all fighting over matters of rights and social justice, so we never bind together to fight THEM.
Of COURSE there are an endless number of "good to have" things I could list, but I'd be here all day. I can bring myself to make common cause if they'll come around to understanding the importance of this particular matter, even if we disagree on 100 other points.
When I get down to it, what I'm really talking about here is: RESPECT FOR DEMOCRACY. Without that, I don't care what OTHER things they might come around on, like admitting Trump is a terrible human being who doesn't belong anywhere near the Oval Office.
MHO, fwiw.

(4,715 posts)At a bare minimum, I want an apology for it all. It started way before Trump with calling the Democratic Party, the Democrat Party. Trump just allowed them to be meaner and meaner to anyone they disagreed with. They need to learn that we are all citizens of the same country, worthy of dignity and their respect.
Till that happens, they can go over there in their own corner and think about what they've done to us all.
