Meet the Trump Voters Who Believe He Staged the WHCD Shooting

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/meet-the-trump-voters-who-believe-he-staged-white-house-correspondents-dinner-shooting

DONALD TRUMP’S CRITICS ON THE LEFT have taken a lot of heat for suspecting that the assassination attempt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner two weeks ago was a false flag attack—perhaps intended to give Trump a boost in the polls or provide an excuse to build his new ballroom.

But it turns out that Trump supporters, already swimming in a sea of other conspiracy theories, don’t necessarily trust the WHCD shooting story presented by the feds, either. That’s one of the big findings of a recent focus group conducted by Bulwark publisher Sarah Longwell’s Longwell Partners of nine people who voted for Trump at least twice (in 2020 and 2024). Those nine people were picked for the focus group because they all now say they disapprove of his presidency. As for the WHCD attack, six participants said they believed the assassination attempt attributed to California teacher Cole Tomas Allen was “a psyop.”

“It doesn’t make sense that somebody should be able to get that close this many times in that way to the president of the United States,” said one member of the focus group.

“I can’t even go to a baseball game and bring in a can of Diet Coke . . . or a concert without a metal detector or them emptying my pockets,” said another.

“I feel like it was a ploy to get his ballroom that he wants, and that’s his reason,” said a third.

1. A couple weeks late to the party, Bulwark?

Almost from the moment it happened, many of the maga folks were saying they believed it was staged. Why do you think it dropped off the msm so fast? It didn't garner him the sympathy poll numbers he was hoping it would, it didn't take attention off of the disastrous war he started because he wanted another countries oil, it definitely didn't take attention off of epstein stuff. It did focus attention on how ill he is, both physically and mentally.

6. Um, the incident happened just 9 days ago so it's impossible to be "a couple weeks late"

On top of that, this has nothing to do with the Bulwark staff opinions. 2 days after the incident, Bulwark reporters were talking about the same things these Trump voters were saying.

I hope this isn't another kind of purity test. Where every Democratic friendly program can be dissected and found to be wanting in any minor subjective fashion.

LW media need to stick together, despite differences in style and associations.

One example is that some other left wing YouTube channels, which I follow and like most days, making The Young Turks into the enemy. Do they skirt the edges, yes. But they're are still regarded as fighting with us, against Fascism. At least......if one doesn't have anything nice to say about a LW media site, don't say anything. We are only defeating ourselves. The RW have all the money and media power. We have to back our own social media sites, in an arena we can at least can have equal footing on. But we should do it by forgiving the diversity, for a greater purpose.

I didn't mean to flutter on

I know - snide ...
But - honestly, there's a certain amount of nuttery that we just have to deal with - added to a certain quotient that we inadvertently 'stumble' into and across - in going about our daily lives. I'm certainly not looking to go out and 'meet' more ....

And, no - it doesn't make me feel any better being assured that we have fruitcakes dangling from the trees - from all corners of the political spectrum. That doesn't really help ....

7. That's why I didn't understand all the scolding and lecturing about the conspiracy theories

I generally find such posts condescending and a bore. Usually it’s the “poo poo, you’re so mean because some fascist died” kind of post. I couldn’t blame anyone for not trusting the official story on what happened.

The real crazy conspiracy theories have always been on the right. Remember, first it was the black helicopters… hell go back farther. It was so well parodied by Dr. Strangelove.

Even with 9/11 it was Alex jones and infowars that played a big part is spreading it.

Their side is generally not into rational thinking anyways.

15. You must have missed the first 24 hours on DU after the WHCD incident
Tue May 5, 2026, 10:21 AM

The site was awash in posts insisting the incident was staged, just as the MAGA nuts the Bulwark interviewed believed.

Centrists talk about “meeting in the middle” to find common ground, but more and more, common ground is inadvertently discovered by extreme believers at the opposite fringes of reality.

Moments before he ran through the line of security, an officer moves the metal detector out of the way—it appeared he was making room for the guy to run through it. Like it was all planned.
