Mark Carney Just Walked Into Armenia and Cracked The American Empire In Half As Canada Entertains Joining The EU
Forty-eight heads of state. Twenty-seven EU nations. The UK. Ukraine. Norway. Iceland. Turkey. Albania. The whole goddamn continent in one room -- and the guest of honour is the guy from the country Trump keeps calling "the 51st state."
The symbolism is so loud it should come with hearing protection.
Who The Hell Is Mark Carney Again? . . .
. . .
Mark Carney is a Harvard and Oxford-educated economist who ran the Bank of Canada through the 2008 financial crisis without a scratch. Then the British poached him to run the Bank of England through Brexit -- the first non-Brit to ever hold the job in its 300+ year history. Then he ran the UN's climate finance file. Then he wrote a book. Then, when Canada needed an adult in the room because Trump had decided he was going to annex us, Carney walked into Liberal leadership, won, called an election, and won that too in April 2025 -- fourth consecutive Liberal majority -- running on one promise: cut the American cord.
He's spent nearly 60 days outside the country since taking office. Not on vacation. Building a new world.

I dont like or agree with everything hes doing, but on trade, he has been masterful.

(24,336 posts)For Putin to humble the main cog in the western alliance by just bribing a few weak individuals (well, perhaps a few threats/actions), is a remarkable show of power of intellect over complacency and stupidity. Gotta give credit to the fox when it is due.

(23,820 posts)If Carney succeeds in creating an economic coalition of the EU and the TPP, both the US and Russia will be the losers, as the pool of their potential trading partners will shrink drastically.
They will hold few, if any, of the cards.

(13,501 posts)We are working to determine our own trade, why would we want the EU to take over our decisions. I like most of what Carney is doing and that which I am not sure of, is because we don't know exactly what is happening, but I also know he can't show his full hand.

The NDP party, of the left, is now so withered they only have 6 seats. Carney is the best of two evils....if you add in Poilievre , leader of the maple maga conservatives.

He was Harvard's backup goalie.
Oh, yeah, and graduated magna cum laude.
The contrast to that orange sac of festering pus at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave just keeps looking more painful.

(26,299 posts)A new balance of power arises. They can destroy the US in a month by sealing borders to a US befriended only by Bibi and UAE.
No trade partners left.

(34,769 posts)Also the article was about the EU, not NATO. Armenia and Turkey have not been accepted as EU members. Armenia is not eligible for NATO. Yet this event takes place in Armenia.
I think Canada wants to build stronger partnerships with Europe.
I really don't think Mexico wants to join NATO because it involves a committment to send troops overseas to fight wars. A year ago, their president was focused on restoring beans, tortillas and instant coffee to a higher place in Mexican society. https://apnews.com/article/mexico-food-agriculture-plan-beans-nostalgia-1e3bd9d5e1af9e57376d2509e90d1260. Mexico's focus just isn't security in Europe, ME and Asia.
It's against the NATO charter to attack a NATO member anyway. So it's not gonna happen.
EU doesn't attack anyone.

United States of North America.
There are 23 countries in North America.

And with 2 senators each (like our founders handed us) it would he harder for someone like Trump to take command.
Solves that damn border problem!!!

. smart and are working on joint plans to benefit the CITIZENS of their nations.
Mexico and Canada reaffirm their commitment to dynamic and forward-looking collaboration. To that end, the President and the Prime Minister are pleased to announce the elevation of their cooperation framework to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, one that will build a future that is more prosperous, secure, inclusive and sustainable for their peoples. Mexico and Canada also commit to frequent meetings and communication at the highest level, as well as between ministers and secretaries, as part of a robust mechanism of ongoing dialogue that will drive the agreed-upon agenda forward.
In addition, President Sheinbaum and Prime Minister Carney are launching the Mexico-Canada Action Plan 2025-2028. This ambitious 3-year plan provides a strategic roadmap based on 4 pillars that reflect their shared priorities: prosperity; mobility, well-being and inclusion; security; and environment and sustainability. The Mexico-Canada Action Plan will serve as the directive for carrying out concrete actions, including collaboration on trade and investment facilitation and port connectivity, as well as promoting cooperation on agriculture, energy, natural resources, health, security, emergency preparedness and climate action. The new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will better equip both countries to address complex global challenges and seize on emerging opportunities.
