AKA the "Met" Gala
That includes celebrities that I admired.
*sigh*
Kudos to Mamdani and Stephen Colbert for NOT going.
Now. let's all eat cake!

(208 posts)It's a fund raiser for the "Museum of Costume Art" ... which doesn't seem to need the money. So it's just the 0.1% people being seen and showing off how little they need their money.
Sad it's not a fund raiser for something actually worthwhile.

(34,783 posts)And I live in San Antonio, not exactly rural. I used to buy it at Walmart, but Walmart stopped carrying it. So now I have to buy it on Amazon.
Revlon Colorsilk isn't exactly a "niche" product either. Brick and mortar is pushing everything on to Amazon.

(34,783 posts)However, there is a Revlon Store on Amazon
https://www.amazon.com/stores/RevlonConsumerProductsCorp/page/DCE0D58B-B4A8-4325-89E2-8478826BF56A?lp_asin=B01LPRLNG6&ref_=ast_bln&store_ref=bl_ast_dp_brandlogo_sto
I would think ordering cosmetics from Revlon, would be like ordering underwear from Hanes.....or nail polish from Sally Hansen or canned goods from Libby's or Coke from Minute Maid...They only sell wholesale.

(5,524 posts)It's mostly multiple car washes, fast food restaurants, pizza, and coffee shops. Now we even have 3 autoparts stores. The only chain stores we have are discount stores like Ollie's, TJ Max, and Sierra, and Walmart. Instacart is too expensive. So if I need stuff that isn't sold in a grocery store I am pretty much out of luck. Amazon is one of the few places I can get other stuff.

You cannot buy these in stores

Plus I'm a canvasser and have to buy lit bags. Where else am I gonna buy them?
Name a place!!!

Not a fan of being shamed.
My kids were really turned off by the 2019 presidential debate when the candidates talked about shutting down Amazon. Young people basically live on Amazon. They work all the time and don't have time to shop. Plus one of my granddaughters is severly autistic.

not everyone has mobility issues or health issues and if they have stores and shops they are able to get to then they are in the perfect position to not order on amazon. not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to do that.

(34,783 posts)I'm on a WalMart budget, but WalMart often doesn't carry products that it advertises and their shipping is outrageous.
One time, they claimed that they didn't have a product in stock and would have to order it. So I did. The thing arrived at my house in a shopping bag later that afternoon! Bag wasn't even sealed. It was an opening shopping bag.
And they charged outrageous shipping.
It was a cheap pair of shorts. Athletic Works Women's ButterCore Gym Shorts $8.98. It obviously wasn't shipped. It was picked up from the store and put in a bag and dropped off at my door. I paid $16.21!
I will take Amazon any day over this!

(34,783 posts)I do not like ordering clothing. I like to try it on.
I long for the days of when brick and mortar had better selections, but those days are gone.
WalMart is going the route of Amazon and their shipping rates are outrageous.
Old Navy is good when I can find something. (I'm 69, so low cut spaghetti strap sundresses are out)
Ross: I bought a dress there in 2024
Amazon: I've had good luck ordering blouses. Ordered a few dresses. (A bit too long, but I jack up the hem by wearing a belt) I do order pettipants etc from them.

There are a lot of small sellers on Amazon, too.

(1,977 posts)Some of us dont have the time, motivation or simply the money to buy local for everything.
Do you use an HMO? Any form of health insurance? Do you have money in a 401k? Do you pay taxes? Do you get medical care? Guess what? Youre probably supporting billionaires. Quit with the shaming and holier than thou lecturing over something as stupid as where people shop. A multi TRILLION dollar market cap company which derives most of its profits from its AWS platform (which is really b2c for the most part), really wouldnt be a impacted by a few hundred people boycotting them.
Your issue is with capitalism itself. Keep your criticism focused, rather than acting like were the problem. Its not like shopping at Wal Mart and supporting the Walton family is that much better.
luv2fly
(2,703 posts)My comment was about people who bitch about billionaires and then they spend money on Amazon supporting the world's biggest billionaire, who just so happens to support Trump, hook, line and sinker. If that works for you, cool.

Once again, do you have a 401k? Do you know what % of the s&p500 is made up by Amazon?
Buying things at Amazon is no better or worse than buying things from other big box stores. Supporting the Walton family isnt much better.

(1,977 posts)Or any billionaire willingly, but we all have lives to lead. That may mean buying stuff from one of the largest retailers in the country.
We vote for democrats to keep the likes of Bezos and Musk in check. The issue is a system that allows people to accumulate and horde such wealth without any consequences.

(1,977 posts)The real focus should be on Amazons treatment of its employees at its warehouses and delivery drivers, and its obvious avoidance of taxes (both by major shareholders like Bezos and at the corporate level). Next, make sure the rest of society benefits to some extent with all the profit theyre making from AI investments (theyre making a ton with AWS of course, but poised to make a lot when Anthropic goes public).
Were not going anywhere by simply lecturing people to stop shopping at whichever places saves people a buck or two, especially in this economy where wallets are stretched thin.

(1,977 posts)Its like other events for elites like Davos, or Cannes.
What bothers me more is their influence on the political system, their ability to get out of paying taxes, and somehow their brilliant foresight to invest in things that always go up
while those of us in the middle class get fucked and audited for the most minor things. And were also used for exit liquidity. This is why I cant trust a hedge funder like Streyer, who made his money manipulating markets.
