Frank said Progressives were making a crucial mistake on culturally sensitive issues like transgender people in sports, by taking the most controversial parts of the agenda and turning them into litmus tests.
Obviously, Ive been working for gay rights started in 1972 when I filed the bill, and we in the movement to established fairness for gay and lesbian and bisexual people, Frank said, continuing:
We picked to work on those issues, which were more acceptable. We didnt get to marriage until after these other things had been resolved. And thats what Im suggesting that we do today. The analog is male to female transsexuals playing sports that are for women. I understand a lot of anger about that. And I think in the interest of the transgender community as well as others, it would be better to go at that in a more granular way and not simply announce that if you dont support it, youre a homophobe.

"Taking the most controversial parts of the agenda and turning them into litmus tests?"
Um, I think it is the right wingers who manufacture controversy around the supposed progressive "agenda."
Comparing Platner to Trump? Wow.
"A stern warning to progressives?"
Very disappointing.

(181,437 posts)I was a member of the Texas Clinton delegation to the 2016 National Convention. The Texas delegation was seated directly behind the Massachusetts delegation. Senator Warren was seated two rows ahead of me. I remember shaking the hand of Congressman Franks at the convention. It was a honor to shake his hand.

A champion of liberal causes during his 32 years representing Massachusetts in the House, Frank says progressive Democrats have embraced an agenda that goes beyond whats politically acceptable.
Until we separate ourselves from that agenda, we dont win, he said in an interview Tuesday.
Frank, who served in the House from 1981 to 2013, said he feels very good no pain, no discomfort, but has entered hospice care as he deals with congestive heart failure. He is remaining in his home in Ogunquit, Maine, where he moved with his husband after retiring from Congress.
At 86, Ive made it longer than I thought, Frank said. At some point, my hearts just going to give out, and its reaching that stage. So Im taking it easy at home and dealing with it by relaxing.

(661 posts)Everyone has self interest.
Barney worked for and got some rights for gay folks in the US.
Everyone should have the right to live the way they want unless they are physically harming others.
That's a wortwhile agenda.
