Pack the Supreme Court

We had the chance, and many Democrats pushed for it when we got control of the House, Senate and White House between 2020 and 2022. It would be a bold move, and there's some risk involved but this is what we need.

Break the filibuster to pack the court with the most progressive, liberal justices we can find.

If Democrats had been bold enough to do what they could have done, and needed to do during that period of time, we would not be where we are now. Trump would have been prosecuted on the indictments for January 6th long before he could be re-elected, and the court would have reversed the Roe decision and Citizens United, there would have been no Presidential immunity and voting rights would be protected. If only, huh?

No more politics as usual.

2. There was a 50/50 split in the Senate

There weren’t 60 votes to put it through. Even if only 50 votes were needed, doubtful that Manchin and Scinema would have supported it.

It didn't need 60 votes, if the fiibuster was out of the way. Republicans wouldn't let idiots like Manchin or Sinema stand in the way, they would have pressured them. And Sinema was on board with it, when the idea was first put out there.

No excuses.

5. Only budget reconciliation doesn't need 60 votes

Expanding the Supreme Court doesn’t qualify. Plus both Manchin and Sinema were against getting rid of the filibuster. Even if Sinema was open to expanding the court, Manchin wasn’t.

It’s not excuses, it’s reality.

9. You put pressure on and you make Manchin go along.

He wasn't against it.That's just a pussyfoot excuse,, "Oh, dear, we can't because so and so won't go along with it."

It was never tried. Just like no one prodded and poked Garland in the rear to get something done. Because this kind of pussyfoot dilly dallying is a Democratic party trademark. And it has to stop.

3. Never, never, never say "pack"!

When will we Democrats ever learn the first thing about framing?

If you propose to "pack" the Supreme Court, most people will reject the idea outright. It sounds crooked, unfair, underhanded.

And it is. The Court has already been packed by the Republicans, and that is crooked, unfair, and underhanded. The results are there for all to see.

The Court needs to unpacked, expanded, reformed, rebalanced - good heavens, anything but "packed".

It implies that the republican "packing" will be undone.

6. You need a strong Democratic president and senate.

If we abandon the fillibuster, the GOP will just use it to their advantage.

FDR tried to expand the court and failed.

Also, don't put it past Trump to expand the court now and fill it with more of his cronies.

10. That's why we should have done it when we had the chance.

And then revise the judiciary act to make it difficult for them to change it. That can all be done, we've seen the GOP do more than that when they were the minority. It earned them a "tsk, tsk, tsk," from Democrats.

Leadership that is bold and takes risks is what we need, and I won't support any other kind at this point. Don't even bother me with some excuse.

If FDR couldn't do it, do you think we could have when we only had a 1 vote majority? He had 2/3 majority!

We tried eliminating the filibuster for voting, but Manchin wouldn't go for it...

Maybe you should ask FDR's ghost or something....

Full stop. That should be a major lesson.
I don’t believe in packing the court. It’s just another Pandora’s box with potentially worse consequences down the road.
