Families of Tumbler Ridge shooting victims sue OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman
Seven families of victims in a February school shooting sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Wednesday, alleging the company and its ChatGPT chatbot were complicit in the injuries or deaths of their children.
The lawsuits follow an apology from Altman last week to the Tumbler Ridge community in Canada for not alerting authorities to the shooters conversations with ChatGPT even after staff flagged the account internally. The lawsuits, filed separately, mark just the latest scrutiny of OpenAI over claims that ChatGPT has encouraged users to engage in real-world violence or self-harm.
An 18-year old d woman killed eight people and wounded dozens in the February attack, which marked Canadas deadliest school shooting in decades. Police say she killed her mother and stepbrother at home before going on to open fire at a local high school, where she killed five students and a teacher, before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Months earlier, the shooter had extensive conversations with ChatGPT discussing scenarios involving gun violence, the lawsuits allege.
ChatGPT deepened the Shooters violent fixation and pushed them toward the attackthe predictable result of a design choice OpenAI made to let ChatGPT engage with users about violence in the first place, states a complaint filed by Cia Edmonds on behalf of her 12-year-old daughter Maya Gebala, who remains in the hospital due to brain and skull injuries from the shooting.
