Boston Marathon runners help man cross finish line in heartwarming moment

This made me tear up a bit when I saw it yesterday. It's Heartwarming. They sacrificed their own personal best run time to help a fellow runner.

The marathon is a big deal to the runners, spectators and to us here in Boston.

The trio’s finishing time was still good enough to qualify them for next year’s race.

Boston Marathon runners help man cross finish line in heartwarming moment

In a display of true sportsmanship, two runners helped an exhausted competitor at the Boston Marathon cross the finish line.

Aaron Beggs, of Northern Ireland, and Robson De Oliveira, of Brazil, put their personal best on hold to help Ajay Haridasse, a Massachusetts native and student at Northeastern University, after he collapsed on Monday just 305 metres from the end of the course.

Beggs, who had also been feeling sick and exhausted, reminded himself of all the people in his running club who might never get to experience the Boston Marathon.

“We were shaking hands as we were running, and was like, ‘We’ve got this. Let’s do this together,'” he added. “It’s not like in shorter races where you’re head-to-head trying to beat people. In the marathon, you’re cheering each other on and encouraging everybody.”

Haridasse told the Boston Herald that he was “getting ready to crawl” to the finish line after falling down for the fourth time.

There is a short video at the link, watch them help Haridasse up and make it across the finish line together.

A selfless act, by not 1 but 2 men. In the video, you see some runners glance at him and keep running.

Thank you brer!

I run short laps. Nothing like I used to run 5 miles.. so I can only imagine having the stamina and lung power to run 20 miles in 3 hours.

Are you kidding me right now!! lol

The poor guy was like rubber. He couldn't even stand up, let alone run. He kept trying to get up only to collapse.

Good on those two guys.

There is a fully equipped medical tent set up at the finish line.

In the vid it shows medical staff grabbing onto Haridasse after he crossed the line and also Oliveira, the man holding him (left facing side) who collapsed on the finish line.

Nurses from my sister's hospital used to work in the hospital tent.

"Aaron Beggs says video of him and Brazilian Robson De Oliveira helping an exhausted competitor went viral due to a need for feel-good stories.

... “For the three of us to continue our journey across the finish line like three strangers [from] three different countries – we’ll have a story for the rest of our lives,” he said.

Beggs emphasised the importance of a feel-good moment like this going viral “where every time we turn on the news it’s just negativity”.

“We all need just a nice story in our lives just to make us smile, bring a tear to our eyes with happiness – it’s nice to be nice.”
