(77,707 posts)One side of the family is from the Messina area. The other half, right across the straits near Reggio.
When I speak Italian, I probably do it with a southern accent!

(25,004 posts)When he was a little boy on the streets while the Allied forces came through (after a devastating bombing), he remembered some soldiers tossing wrapped candies to the kids.
Years later, when arriving in Lawrence, Kansas to teach Italian, he decided to go to a local drugstore, sat at the soda counter, and decided to try something he had never heard of before. When he took his first sip of root beer, the memories from that encounter 20-25 years ago came flooding through his mind. He could even remember the smells and the faces of the men in the jeep.

(77,707 posts)My dad, who was fluent in Italian, ended up getting stationed in Naples (medical corps) as a medic & translator I'm the Army hospital.
So much infrastructure was damaged in the war, that civilians had to go to tye Army for care.
He got to visit family every leave by just taking the train a couple hours south.
I've been to Italy >40 times, but never south of Sorrento. So, nowhere close to where my family is from.

(91,502 posts)Ill never forget the day when he was thinking back, and he said (quietly and with some pride) Ive never raised a gun against my fellow man.
Boy was that ever a moment for me! Gave me a whole new way to appreciate him.

(77,707 posts)So, he never saw anything close to battle action.
Korea was starting full, so he avoided that by being bilingual.

Interestingly, although she grew up on Staten Island, you wouldn't know that culturally.
