She planned to meet with her adult children in Austin after the Wisconsin trip, the only difference she foresaw in an otherwise typical trip. Her routine for years included flying from either Harlingen or Brownsville to far-flung parts of the country where South Asian immigrants needed language access. For this trip, the flight was out of Harlingen.
But, around 5 p.m. on March 17, Batra was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after passing through security at Harlingen International Airport. In a sworn deposition that was filed as part of a petition for habeas corpusa legal request to be released on the grounds that the detention is unlawfulBatra said the people who arrested her did not have visible badges nor were they wearing uniforms. One of those agents had asked Batra if she knew she was in the country illegally and that she had a deportation order. She replied that her work authorization status, which she applied for regularly after being granted a legal status called withholding of removal by a New Jersey immigration judge decades ago, was good for another four years.
That doesnt mean you can be here forever, the agent replied. Two more plainclothes agents would join the two that detained her, bringing her down the escalator and to the front of the airport.

Scream fire. Better response than calling for help.
Call 911 immediately for kidnapping.
Take photos if you can.
Get their dna if you can.
Sit down, make them carry you.
Dont obey in advance.

(6,701 posts)guys use talk to give them time to circle and capture. Its not about words.
Dont give them that time.
Bad guys also use words as justification for their actions. Like a bar fight stirring up trouble. What are you looking at
?
Dont give them the justification.

(22,716 posts)During the nonviolent protests of the civil rights movement, demonstrators were trained to do just that (among other things). Don't fight back; just become dead weight so that police literally have to carry you. Make them do all the work.
It was effective then, but I have no idea how well it would work with ICE.

(4,462 posts)... the Worst Of The Worst are the ones doing the deporting. They are malignant filth with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. To dispose of them in a toxic waste dump would be an insult to toxic waste. They're arresting journalists for doing their jobs, and getting away with it! The list of their crimes is endless.

(14,031 posts)I really don't know why I don't see us doing the obvious. Dems should be running to the front of the pack, loudly vowing to "rid the country of the worst of the worst." That would be political judo and help us get a leg up on the immigration issue. Instead, we let the showboats get on camera and yell "ICE out!" to the choir.
All that does is give ammunition to the opposition. This poor lady, then, ends up paying the price.

That's the least a civilized society can do to right the wrongs that have been carried out against them by this foul administration and its criminal goons.

ICE Arrest Immigration Court Interpreter With Son in US Army
3 days agoA longtime immigration court interpreter has been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Meenu Batra, 53, an interpreter

(106,360 posts)As the only authorised court interpreter for 3 major languages, I'm not surprised. She is a vital part of Texas justice.
She is exactly who a sensible country would be falling over themselves to give citizenship to.

(2,399 posts)should establish a "hot line" for reporting and publicize it for analysis of immediate action needed.
Start to hire and spread ACLU attorneys across every state who can respond immediately to any they deem necessary....
And throw a monkey wrench in their corrupt and illegal charades.......
I can only imagine, if the ACLU did something like this, and appealed for donations from all of us, that we all would donate immediately and keep on donating, rather than funding a do nothing group of our current politicians.......
There have to be good attorneys in every state that we and the ACLU could pay to assist in this war....

(130,842 posts)Here in Minneapolis, for example, there is a collective of volunteer lawyers who take habeas cases for ICE detainees. There are probably organizations like that all over the country. The National Immigration Law Center has a list of resources on its website. https://www.nilc.org/request-for-legal-assistance/#what-we-work-on

(2,399 posts)coordinated effort by the ACLU may be a start to waging war.......The constant bombarding of the courts........
As it is now, and has been, the Republicans across the nation are continuously burying the courts with their bullshit, and it is working to slow us down........

(245 posts)The test is extremely easy and it only takes a few years. She would have been a citizen 30 years ago unless there is an arrest or something we don't know about. Being familiar with our courts I'm sure she knew all the particulars of laws here and there. Some countries don't allow citizens of other countries to own land.
