At his news conference March 16, President Trump said, "We don't need oil. We have all oil we need for ourselves."

As usual, he's wrong. In 2025, US petroleum exports totaled about 11 million barrels per day; however, we had to import about 8 million barrels per day.

Why? Our very old refining capacity was designed for what's called sour oil. Due to fracking, we now produce more oil than we ever have; however it's sweet and US refineries can't process it.

Due to historical supplies, costs, and environmental reasons, we haven't built new refineries capable of refining the kind of oil we now produce. So, we export the sweet oil to Europe, which has refineries designed for that, and import sour oil from Canada, Mexico and Venezuela for our refineries.

OP - The President has people smart enough and experienced enough to tell him that, but just like in other matters, they lack the courage to tell him something different that he misunderstands or already believes. Due to his malignant narcissism, those that dared to correct him, soon lost their job. Examples: Tillerson, Mattis, Kelly, Fauci, ad infinitum. He surrounds himself with yes men.
