... A new Reuters/Ipsos poll shows most people expect President Donald Trump to order troops into the war with Iran. But they do not support that decision. The survey offers a consensus of public opinion as the administration considers its next moves.
The survey, which polled 1,545 U.S. adults from March 17 to March 19, carries a margin of error of about 3%. However, its findings are significant: 65% of polled Americans believe Donald Trump will ultimately order soldiers into Iran for a large-scale ground war. However, support for such an action is nearly nonexistent, with only 7% backing the idea.
This Donald Trump-Iran war poll indicates a deep divide between public expectation and public desire. While 34% of respondents said they would support sending U.S. ground troops into Iran, but only in the form of special forces. Whereas a clear majority, as in 55%, stated they do not support sending any troops at all.
The data further reveals a stark partisan split regarding the current war. According to the poll, 77% of Republicans approve of the U.S. strikes on Iran. This support drops dramatically among other groups, with only 28% of independents and a mere 6% of Democrats voicing approval. Overall, the survey found that 37% of Americans approve of the war, while 59% disapprove ...

Confronted with polls showing broad opposition to the war in Iran, the White House has some options.

Team Trump is apparently going with a âonly Republican voters countâ response.

But on CBS News Face the Nation, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz, Trumps former White House national security adviser, went in a very different direction.
BRENNAN: 60% of Americans disapprove of military action against Iran. 57% think the conflict is going badly. How do you tell the American people they're wrong?

WALTZ: Well, I could quote a whole slew of polls that show, for example, self-described MAGA Republicans give the president 100% approval
.....It was a candid peek into a curious perspective. To hear the ambassador tell it, it doesnt much matter what Americans think; what matters is what Republicans think.
Sure, national surveys show broad public opposition to the war that the president launched for reasons hes struggled to explain, but according to Waltz, voters outside the GOP base, in a rather literal sense, dont count.
The New York Times Jamelle Bouie recently argued, Trump seems to see Democratic-led states and the people in them less as constituents to which he has a set of larger obligations and more as enemies to be pacified and defeated. For Trump, there is no whole people of the United States. There are only his people and his states.
Waltz tacitly endorsed this argument to a national television audience, shrugging off the attitudes of a majority of Americans and focusing entirely on like-minded partisans. That perspective might make Team Trump feel better in the short term, but its worth reminding the White House that when the midterm elections arrive in the fall, MAGA Republicans wont be the only ones casting ballots.
