FBI Calls Former Harvard Scientist Tied To Secret Lab in Wuhan 'Convicted Chinese Spy'

Early last April, President Trump was seeking support for his planned “Liberation Day” tariffs and sought out venture capitalist Timothy Draper for advice. But before the meeting could take place, according to an FBI memo contained in the Epstein files, Draper needed to be vetted by what the Secret Service calls an ARMS Reach background check, especially after a cursory search of the billionaire’s name popped a reference to an FBI number connected to a Transnational Organized Crime investigation.

The FBI agent responding to the vetting authority made some alarming connections between Draper and an unusual coterie of associates named in the bureau’s files. Among them is a Russian publicist who became famous for sharing a kiss with Vladimir Putin on state television, tech giant Bill Gates, a Beverly Hills sex club operator, a SpaceX executive, a former spokesperson for Trump’s Health and Human Services department and a prominent former Harvard University Chemistry Department Chair named Charles Lieber.

Lieber, the FBI notes in the email, is now a “convicted Chinese spy and researcher.”

The statement is a startling new revelation from U.S. investigators about the once prominent nanoscientist. Lieber’s U.S. career ended when he was dragged out of his laboratory at Harvard University by a federal SWAT team on Jan. 28, 2020.

Until now, the word “spy” has not been used in connection with Lieber, who was convicted in Dec. 2021 by a federal jury on two counts of making false statements to federal authorities, two counts of making and submitting a false income tax return, and two counts of failing to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts with the Internal Revenue Service.
