Former Virginia first lady Dorothy McAuliffe announced Wednesday that shes running for Congress, joining a crowded Democratic primary for a district situated in the Washington suburbs.
Virginians are working harder than ever, but the middle class is still out of reach for too many, said McAuliffe, who served as U.S. special representative for global partnerships during the Biden administration and whose husband is former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), in a statement.
We need a leader who has a record of delivering and can finally bring down costs for families, who will increase access to affordable healthcare, and who will never back down from holding Donald Trump and [U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement] accountable, she added.
Dorothy McAuliffe joins a burgeoning field to helm Virginias 7th Congressional District. Shes aided by the fact that her spouse is both a former Virginia governor and major Democratic fundraiser. Other Democrats eyeing the field include former federal prosecutor J.P. Cooney and Virginia Del. Dan Helmer (D), who serves as the chair of the Virginia House of Delegatess campaign arm.
