Toronto police and the RCMP are investigating after shots were fired at the American consulate early Tuesday morning in what’s being described as a “national security incident.”

Local police believe the shooting near Queen Street West and University Avenue happened around 4:30 a.m., but officers weren’t notified until roughly an hour later, said Deputy Chief Francisco Barredo at a morning media scrum.

Authorities are now looking for two men who were seen travelling in a white Honda CRV. The vehicle stopped in front of the U.S. consulate and two individuals got out and discharged “what appears to be a handgun” at the building, police said.

It’s too early to confirm the motive or whether the shooting is related to the ongoing U.S.-Israeli war in Iran, police said.
