WASHINGTON Capitol Hill is bracing for an imminent ask from President Donald Trump for billions in emergency cash to fund the escalating war with Iran.
A week into the conflict, congressional leaders, including the top Republican appropriators in the Senate and House of Representatives, have publicly said a request is almost certainly on its way. Yet exactly how much money the White House will want, when Trump will demand it and what Republicans may do to sweeten the deal are open questions.

They already seem divided about what they could do. Some, including progressives such as Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, are pledging to vote no before seeing any such ask, arguing the Pentagon is flush with cash after the passage of the "One Big, Beautiful Bill Act" and an annual defense spending bill of over $830 billion.
"The Republicans have already given $1 trillion to the military," Warren told USA TODAY. "No one knows how much money is sloshing around over there and where it's being spent."

What does the GOP care? It's not their money.

(479 posts)I see zero chance Trump doesn't get the money.
Congress had some power over spending, once upon a time. But they willingly turned that power over to the exec
branch. That's just reality.

(22,549 posts)Congress has already shown by the War Powers votes they will not stand up to him.
They will make long speeches about fiscal responsibility, supporting troops and question the validity of the war. But in the end Congress will give him whatever amount of money is needed.

(60,050 posts)I wish that we had instead just allocated a third of the money and spent it on a massive, intensive clandestine (and not so clandestine) help for the internal Iranian opposition. Just given them anything they wanted, and let them do their thing. Electronics, phones, clandestine internet networks, weapon smuggling networks, clandestine printing facilities, training, just everything and anything. The people, especially the younger ones, for the most part, hate the religious regime. But they do NOT want to be dominated from the outside, and certainly not by us. After two Trump presidencies, they weren't born yesterday. They see Russian and Chinese infiltration of our internal politics to the point where the last thing they'll accept is American dominance of their opposition movement(s), risking their innermost secrets landing of the desks of Putin and Xi half a day later.
