(1,553 posts)To further clarify, it's not like a bank account where you'd need either a subpoena, be the sender or access to my account to see if there was a deposit. The Bitcoin chain is public. You don't know who owns a particular account or wallet, but you know where all the Bitcoin is if that makes sense.

(1,553 posts)If the wallet is in a US controlled market, there are the same know your customer rules as banks have, but if the wallet is registered in Belarus or Russia, not so much. And if people asking for the ransom are smart, they'd take steps to hide things.
