TX-18: Lina Hidalgo endorses Rep. Al Green for Texas regular congressional primary election
Just two days after the runoff election in Texas' 18th Congressional District, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo announced she is endorsing U.S. Rep. Al Green in the Democratic primary for the newly redrawn district, setting up a high-profile contest against Christian Menefee.
In a statement posted Monday on Green's Facebook page, Hidalgo cited her work overseeing disaster recovery and public health in Harris County as the basis for her endorsement of the 77-year-old longtime politician.
"As County Judge overseeing disaster recovery and public health, I know federal leadership matters," Hidalgo said. "Congressman Al Green fights for Houston's values and the resources our communities depend on. Al Green has delivered over $90 million for flood relief in Harris County. He's a true champion for Congress."
The endorsement comes only days after Hidalgo publicly backed 37-year-old Menefee in the special election runoff to fill the remainder of the term left vacant following the deaths of former U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and her successor, former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner.
