deleted without opening. Warning to all, SSA does NOT send phone emails. Be careful.

(31,825 posts)Social Security log in procedure you agreed to be sent texts from SSA then one may get legitimate texts from SSA.
The better procedure is to not click on the text but log in to your SSA account to see if you have a legitimate notice.

(69,171 posts)If you get a call or text or email from somebody claiming to be from Medicare, Social Security, the IRS, your state's Dept of Transportation claiming you owe a toll, or ANYTHING like that - don't click any links, don't respond, don't give any information.
Instead, go immediately to your account via your own link and check if it's ok.
I get calls all the time from someone asking if I received my new Medicare card and they'll look up my account to confirm all is well if I give them my account number. I say "thanks, I'll check my account" and they hang up.

(993 posts)They have changed the set up very recently I guess. I had an old account at SSA with my own personal password, etc. They changed that so I needed to sign up again. I attempted to do that last week and the final step was that I had to give them permission to access my records, all across the system. I will not do that. I'd like to hear from other people if that is the same thing that they got when they needed to sign up? Thanks.

(23,391 posts)I have lots of privacy controls on in my browser (Firefox) and it wouldn't let me set up one of those accounts. I do remember it asking for a lot of additional information. I haven't pursued any further for now.

(993 posts)I also use Firefox.

(151,016 posts)Works fine and I can get right in. There's another alternative, but I never used it. The idea is to have a second check that it is you signing on. A bit more safety, I guess.

(2,981 posts)Anyone can write an email that says it comes from ssa.gov. It's easy to embed links that look like they go to ssa.gov, but take you to some scammer's web page.
If you want to go to ssa.gov, 1) use your known browser, 2) on a computer you maintain and keep virus free, 3) typing the domain in by hand. Same for your bank. Same for your brokerage.
Never, ever go to those sites through a link in email.

(10,860 posts)I would add that anything is easily faked on the internet. Go check things out before you click on anything or give a yes to anything that appears in your emails, or your social media, or any of it.
I know it sounds like a 'Mad Max' scenario... but that is because it is.

(114,544 posts)The amount of "rip off the old people" scams keeps increasing with my every birthday. I want all those assholes thrown into prison until they're my age, then they can be let out so they'll be the ones getting scammed by punks.
Honestly, the shit that goes on today makes me wish they were still at the level of that old bastard in Mississippi who sent out all the Nigerian prince scam emails in the 90s.

Fun times ahead.
