WI-GOV: Democrat Mandela Barnes unveils bid for Wisconsin governor

Former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes (D) unveiled his bid for governor on Tuesday, joining a crowded Democratic field looking to succeed retiring Gov. Tony Evers (D) next year.

“Seems like the harder you work, the more Washington looks the other way. Lower taxes for billionaires, higher prices for working people,” Barnes said in his launch ad. “Under Trump, the name of the game has been distraction and chaos to avoid accountability.”

“The only way for our state to move forward is to reject the Washington way and get things done the Wisconsin way,” he added, touching on issues around affordability, fair wages and opportunities for vocational training.

Barnes served as lieutenant governor from 2019-23 under Evers, who announced in July he would not seek a third term. Prior to that, he served two terms in the Wisconsin State Assembly.
