'Disconcerting': Ex-White House cardiologist deeply skeptical of 'weird' Trump MRI reveal

Dr. Jonathan Reiner, the late former Vice President Dick Cheney's cardiologist for nearly 30 years, pushed back on White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's claims that President Donald Trump's MRI was apparently "preventative" during an interview with CNN.
"Well, there really is no preventative cardiac MRI," Reiner said. "This is not a standard test for, you know, an 80-year-old man to undergo advanced imaging. Of course, the whole note has kind of a weird, defensive, you know, evasive tone to it. First of all, this is not part of the president's comprehensive physical examination."....
"He had that in April, and then he underwent some more testing in July," Reiner said. "If you look at his first administration, the president, like most presidents, only underwent one comprehensive physical exam every year. So this comes completely off-cycle. Second, it's filled with euphemisms. Again, Dr. Barbara Bell, the president's physician, states that he underwent advanced imaging. Well, what specific advanced imaging did the president have? Was it an MRI, as the president said? Was it a CT [scan]? Did he have both? Why not just spell it out?"
Reiner explained how the administration could have his doctor or health official describe what happened.
"It's as if a patient came in for a chest x-ray, and then I only told people that the patient underwent simple radiologic imaging. Just, you know, just spell it out," he added. "This is, again, not part of a comprehensive screening, particularly, you know, abdominal imaging. Why would someone undergo a preventive, quote, preventative MRI imaging or CT imaging of the abdomen? This obviously was performed in response to some clinical concern, which is fine."
The MRI could have been out of a health concern and the American people deserve to know that, Reiner explained.
"Things happen to people as, you know, as we all get older. And the president is almost 80. So instead of this kind of evasive, almost laughable kind of note. Just spell out what happened. I hope the imaging is normal and great. That would be excellent news. But this kind of piece-by-piece, drip-by-drip release of information is disconcerting," Reiner said.

Personally, I think they ought to have one weekly with a bipartisan committee reviewing results to determine if they should continue leading the country.

(75,476 posts)...as the doctor noted, MRIs don't prevent anything, so calling it preventative is a lie.
It's the lying that bugs me.

Still believe Prezs should have periodic MRIs and other tests.

(75,476 posts)For what?
They are so specific it would take 10 or more, with and without contrast, to check for all possibilities.
In June, i had 2, (with & without, so 4 scans) and it took 2 hours plus. And, they knew exactly what they were looking for.
They would spend 12 hours doing scans without any intent? Without knowing what they were trying to find?
Sorry, but that just doesn't make sense.
And, if they did a whole body MRI panel, the WH had no reason to lie about "preventative". They would have just said the checked everything an MRI can check. But, they didn't.
Finally, checking just one part of the body by MRI without reason to suspect that function is a problem is just a wild medical guess. Again, that makes no sense

(75,476 posts)That's NOT how MRI works, and I suspect you know that.
Taking a contrarian position for the sake of being contrary is weak.

(12,222 posts)National health experts generally oppose preventive tests like MRIs, but that is more a cost matter and fear of spending billions on tests, chasing false positives, etc. That is not the case for a Prez.

(60,719 posts)I've been at the hospital with relatives whose doctors recommended CT scans and MRIs. In each case, either when they were prescribed or at the emergency room, the reason for the test was explained at a level we understood.
If that kind of decision was explained to regular people, I assume they would have to balance the pros and cons of those tests for the President.
I wonder if the circulation problems they disclosed might have triggered wanting to check out or even rule out possible related problems.

(9,950 posts)...and, no, """preventative""" MRIs for presidents are not a thing, no matter how much you try to rationalize it away.
There's a reason he got that MRI and we, the American people, deserve to know the real reason why.

(6,190 posts)His appearance validates that. The vague assertions and side-stepping from the administration indicates they're covering up and redirecting from particulars about the med-eval.
Rep. Kay Granger legislated (secretly) from an assisted dementia living center during her last months in office. Mr. trump may end up doing that very thing for his last three years in office.

(1,256 posts)how much he paid to have that (fake)analysis written? Even though many may disagree with me, money can buy just about anything. By now, Trump has grifted a ton of money.
I mean, just look at where we're at today. It was money and lies that got him there.

(17,196 posts)Don't remember that being in the Hippocratic oath.
Look at the many doctors that have written excuses for him in the past. Even though they took that Hippocratic oath, that will not stop them from sugar coating and possibly glazing over some critical items. It's all in the appearance and interpretation. And believe me, Trump reviewed the final result before he gave them the OK to post it.
Hey, it's just a thought.

(31,025 posts)1. if trump was healthy he wouldn't have to take his "annual" physical twice in one year
2. people do not get "routine" MRIs; there is an area of concern that they wanted to take a closer look at, for a reason. The reason is not that krasnov is old; it's that he is sick.
the letter was probably written by some hack at the WH and the dr was told to sign it. if he didn't he wouldn't have a job today.

It's fine to say that the President's medical issues are private, but they have to duck and weave. They can't help themselves.

(249 posts)every trip through the machine would be a "MRI" to an ignorant dolt like tRump.
I've been through the machine 4 times this year, I think only once was an actual MRI.
My last test, a cardiac stress test, they inject a radioactive dye and then image from that - no magnetism involved.
As to the bruise on his hand, I had a bruise much like that after my cataract surgery. So tRump was injected with either dyes ot radioactive tracers and put through the big scary machine at least twice.
But it's not done as preventive, it is diagnostic or it is done in preparation of a more serious procedure. I think they scanned my lungs before doing mu open heart surgery. And a CT scan before angiogram. Etc.
