I don't know what the future holds for democracy but I am confident good people, with good intentions, Democrats, will try to make things right but I just have no confidence that is possible now.
Our allies will never trust us again. Financial markets will never trust the dollar again.
We are literally on the cusp of a stock market collapse. A healthcare collapse. A diplomatic collapse. A military collapse.
America has become a dark, evil place where hate and fear live.
We are murdering innocent people abroad and have made enemies of the poorest and most vulnerable in our own society.
From healthcare to law enforcement to basic services, I have lost all confidence in our government to be effective.
It not a dig at Democrats, they are trying but Republicans are so deep in this cult mentality with Mango Mussolini and so desperate for power and wealth, that they are happy to burn the country down to obtain it.
Even if we win a majority in the House and Senate, even if we win the WH, they will still be there to drag down, to water down, Democrats every move. To be fair, Republicans are much better at sabotaging the legislative process than Democrats are in Congress.
The Republicans have reshaped our government in ways I never anticipated or thought possible and at a speed that leaves your head spinning.
Interestingly, it appears to be mostly through gross incompetence and grift and racism and misogyny and bigotry and xenophobia, then an actual plan.
It's a clusterfuck of the worst human beings possible, gathered in one place, for the sole purpose of screwing up anything and everything a Democrat ever touched without regard to who it hurts or any other consequences.
These are dark times and right now I just don't see a way forward. At least not for many, many years into the future. Hopefully I'm wrong but our society is so fractured I just don't see a way forward from where we stand right now.
Stay safe. Hug your friends and family. Be good to each other.

Because of a massive cultural shift away from their old ways and a massive influx of financial assistance.
This country is stuck on stupid. Religious extremism, greed and ignorance are not only acceptable here, its the normal and expected behavior of our society. Our society praises cruelty and indifference to those on the edges of our society, those that society has decided it's ok to hate, from immigrants to women. The only safe demographic is "white, male, Christian"
To be non-Christian or educated or have empathy for others, or be an immigrant or person of color or LGBTQ+ or just a woman is now the abnormal behavior. That which society does not like.
Until that changes, there can be no recovery.

(22,814 posts)So many "leaders" went along with the racist crap.
If I feel that contradiction so very strongly, eventually more people will.
I guess the "best" we can expect is that the cult condenses to the 26% or so max that cults reach and they are marginalized.

The best, the ONLY cure to WhiteChristianNationalism, race baiting, mysogyny, etc. is WINNING
"Our Society" is a bunch of fascist wannabes who control the media. Wish I had the answer to that. I think I wrote Micheal Bloomberg to buy them all out (if he could) and bring some more neutral position to them. No real chance.
We have to attack them at the margins and get back in power, at least to undo some of the damage, and when their bloived Fuhrer is gone, let them splinter.

(2,165 posts)Are they bold enough to play hardball and use Tramp / GOP tactics to make things right? I dunno.

(7,164 posts)That as a slam. But we have a ton of older democrats in office who drank the Austeriry tea of Reagan and Thatcher and became "new democrats"... our usual centrist dems joined them and raised the next gen in that unholy milieu instead of teaching them and raising them in the FDR politics which actually won us elections and helped everyone. Until we get back to those basics, im afraid democrats, like the repugs, are going to be wandering the deserts while the rest of us just die.

(21,710 posts)Only elect Dems who support expanding the court to 13 seats, and support killing the filibuster to do so.
By neutralizing the MAGA majority on the court, Dems can then begin the hard work of restoring democracy and repairing the damage from the Trump era, without fear of legislation getting blocked in the senate or overturned by the court.
Justice matters.
(9,183 posts)Is there a genius somewhere to make sure lies for greed are made illegal in telecommunications, not just on "broadcasting" but EVERYWHERE?
I doubt it exists.

(21,710 posts)The people will reward them with majorities for a generation, and Republicans wont get another trifecta opportunity to reverse (whatever that means) the progress made by Dems that benefits the lives of all Americans.
After Dems expand the court, they can:
Raise the minimum wage
Restore reproductive rights
Make the ACA subsidies permanent
Repeal the Trump tax cuts for billionaires
Reinstate the Child tax credit
Forgive student loan debt
And so much more to repair the damage of the Trump era.
They can do it all without fear that legislation would be blocked by the filibuster (because they will have killed it to expand the court) or that new laws would be overturned by the MAGA majority on the court.

(11,577 posts)My point is it doesn't matter.
They will just ignore every law passed by Congress they don't agree with and drag out litigation for years trying to force them to do it. Because at the end of the day, there has been no accountability for this administration and none coming.
Kegseth is a perfect example. He is absolutely guilty of war crimes but this Republican DOJ is never going to file that case. No court of law will ever hold this administration accountable for its actions.

It would appear that as a nation, we have definitely reached the point of no return, and/or checkmate in November 2024......

(4,086 posts)...but I cannot allow myself to stay there. So I turn my mind to other things, cooking, painting, dancing, while ALSO putting my feet on the ground and doing the work with other Democrats. I do my best everyday to behave as if we have a fighting chance to save this Democracy. If we ever lose that hope, we truly are cooked. Our individual contributions may not add up to much, but the millions of Americans who are working to turn it around--far more than the ones working to destroy us--makes a HUGE difference. Do the work, knowing your contribution is important and you are not alone. Then enjoy a good meal, a great book, music album, a walk in the park, petting your dog...whatever it takes to take care of yourself so you can battle another day.

The full text of which was widely available for months if not a year before the 2024 elections.
