Michael and Susan Dell to Put $250 in 25 Million Children's Accounts

Michael and Susan Dell announced on Tuesday that they would deposit $250 in individual investment accounts for 25 million children, an amount totaling $6.25 billion. It is one of the largest philanthropic gifts ever to go directly to Americans.

The money expands the number of children who will receive seed money for the investment accounts, known as “Trump accounts.” The federal government will give $1,000 to babies born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028. The Dells’ gift extends to children up to 10 years old, though it limits eligibility to those who live in a ZIP code where the median household income is below $150,000.

The federal government is expected to set up the accounts next summer, but many details of how they will work are still to be determined. There is no system in place yet for registering, and it is unclear where the accounts will reside.

Mr. Dell, the chairman and chief executive of Dell Technologies, first made his fortune by selling personal computers directly to consumers rather than through retail outlets. He sees this gift in a similar light.

Can they withdraw early so they can pay down their school cafeteria tabs?

What if instead of building a system that relies on random philanthropic grants we instead simply taxed the ultra wealthy slightly more and created institutionalized safety nets..?

would find it hard.
plus overcoming the inertia to get people to start saving is a big deal.

we tried to set up a school savings account for a relative but couldn't get them to give us the needed information to open one.

Although I know there’s some tax write off happening.

But why not concentrate that donation into fewer things to make an impact? Fix 1,000 schools or libraries or community hospitals.

$6.25 billion is a lot of money but it’s spread so thinly, it’s not much more than a paid advertisement for the Dells.

It would be better served if it were offered as scholarship money for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go.

8. Nice gesture, but how much will it actually help those individuals? At least he's NOT using the 6.25 billion to actively

destroy civil society, unlike some billionaires I can think of. So that's something I guess.

It restricts the birth date, the age, the zip code. Seems to me pedo Trump and the Dells should just hand $1,250 to anyone who names their newborn white baby Trump Dell.

It's never going to happen. It's going to be set up "next summer." Pedo Trump can instantly deport migrants of a darker color than his makeup and fire government workers in less than 30 days but he can't set up funds for children in less than 7 months? Yeah, right......

and create support for him and Repubs since none of these accounts can be set up before July 4 2026 just like his proposed $2000 checks that won't go out until next summer.

Billions of new money will potentially enter stock funds between the government $1000 giveaway to those born from Jan 2025 on with no income restrictions and the extra Dell money that is more restricted but payable to older children up to age 10 unlike the government money that is only for newborns.
