Leader Schumer To File War Powers Resolution Opposing Trump Military Actions Against Venezuela

Chuck Schumer @SenSchumer
Let me be clear:

If Donald Trump continues his actions against Venezuela, we will immediately file a War Powers Resolution to block the deployment of U.S. forces to Venezuela.

The power to declare war lies solely in the hands of Congress—not Donald Trump.

"Should a strike occur, we will force a debate in Congress and force a vote to prevent U.S. troops from being in hostilities against Venezuela," Schumer, a New York Democrat, said. "Our troops' safety and our national security are at stake."

"All it takes is one lapse in judgment from either side, and suddenly our troops could find themselves in an armed conflict with Venezuela," Schumer said.

"This man is a national embarrassment," Schumer said of Hegseth, who has faced the most scrutiny over the September strike for authorizing the operation that killed survivors on the vessel that had been struck in the Caribbean.

Last week, Schumer issued a similar warning about Trump's actions toward Venezuela. He wrote in an X post: "President Trump’s reckless actions towards Venezuela are pushing America closer and closer to another costly foreign war. Under our Constitution, Congress has the sole power to declare war — not the President — and Congress has not authorized the use of military force against Venezuela."

"President Trump’s reckless actions towards Venezuela are pushing America closer and closer to another costly foreign war," Schumer stated (yesterday). "Under our Constitution, Congress has the sole power to declare war — not the President — and Congress has not authorized the use of military force against Venezuela."

The minority leader cautioned the president to avoid entering into another overseas conflict, writing that "Americans are tired of endless foreign wars that cost the lives of countless American service members and drain precious resources."

Senate GOP blocks war-powers curb on Trump as U.S.–Venezuela standoff deepens

Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked a resolution aimed at restricting President Donald Trump’s authority to launch military strikes against Venezuela, deepening tensions over an expanding U.S. campaign in the Caribbean.

The measure, sponsored by Democratig Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, failed 49–51. Only two Republicans — Rand Paul of Kentucky and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — joined Democrats in support. The resolution would have required Trump “to terminate the use of the United States Armed Forces for hostilities within or against Venezuela” unless explicitly authorized by Congress.

The vote came amid mounting concern in Congress that U.S. strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific could escalate into a direct confrontation with the Nicolás Maduro regime.

...this is a continuing effort, an ongoing effort to push one through. It's a process, not something Schumer does by fiat. The Senate Dem leaders act on important issues and initiatives through the collective will of their Dem caucus.

It's a political process that republicans ultimately control, not the Senate Dem minority or Schumer.

...besides, the resolution he's talking about is likely from Tim Kaine who discussed his proposal yesterday.

This isn't tiddlywinks, it's a political process where you need to not only organize the votes of Democrats, which he already has, but gain the votes of a sufficient number of republicans for it to have any chance at doing anything.

But sure, we can pretend that Democrats control the Senate and can just move a WPA resolution on the minority of members that voters in their past pique chose to saddle them with.
