Indiana lawmakers in state House to convene session with redistricting top of mind

ndiana House members are expected to push forward Monday with redrawing the state’s congressional districts in Republicans’ favor, increasing pressure on their defiant counterparts in the GOP-led Senate to meet President Donald Trump’s demands.

Republicans who control the House chamber have said there’s no doubt that redistricting will pass that chamber. But the fate of any proposal to emerge remains uncertain in the Senate. Republicans also control that chamber but members of the caucus have resisted pressure to redistrict for months.

Senate leadership recently backed off from previous intent not to meet at all, agreeing to convene next Monday. But it’s still unclear if enough senators will back a new map.

No official map or legislation had been made public by late Friday.

Yeah, it's bad. One much needed reform that would avoid this is to increase the number of US House seats LymphocyteLover Monday #6

With the President and Governor already calling for it, if the House passes it it will be tough for Senate Republicans to sit there and do nothing. I’ve always assumed eventually they will cave and pass it to get Trump off their backs. We will see

FB friend says:
"Hey folks,
The Indiana House is back in session. Are they meeting to talk about lowering healthcare costs? Improving our schools? Maybe ways to bring down grocery prices or keep data centers from drinking up our natural resources?
Nope. Instead they’re carving up our Congressional districts like a Thanksgiving turkey so the White House can walk away with a couple of “easy seats.”
And it isn’t just Elkhart County that gets sliced up. Our city does too. Under this draft map, the north side ends up in the Second District with South Bend, while the south side gets shipped off to our friends in Fort Wayne.
That’s confusing for voters and bad for representation.
Call your state reps and state senators and tell them no.
If you have to gerrymander to win, you’re admitting you can’t.

As an Indiana resident the fact that someone in East Chicago could have the same representative as those down in Wabash county 2 1/2 hours away is downright laughable. Probably others are just as ridiculous but that one stands out to me as a resident of the north.

I was born and spend my pre college years in East Chicago, Hammond and Highland. While I was in college my parents moved to Schererville. I agree that the region has little in common with Wabash.

so not so many people are crammed into one big diverse district like that... of course rethugs won't like it because then they can't rig via gerrymandering as easily
