Nixon and the Nuclear Codes

During the last days of the Nixon presidency, his mental state reportedly deteriorated and he was drinking heavily. The Secretary of Defense, James Schlesinger, ordered the Joint Chiefs to check with him or Secretary of State Kissinger before launching any missiles. Essentially launch authority rested with someone other than a sitting President, something not done except in the case where a president was in surgery or something of that nature, so far as we know.
The sitting president’s mental state is deteriorating. That much is obvious to the most casual observer. Kegsbreath is no James Schlesinger. And love or hate Henry Kissinger (and there is plenty to both love and hate), he was the voice of reason in this situation. There are no Kissingers In this administration.
What do you suppose is going on behind the scenes, if anything? Would the Joint Chiefs obey a launch order?

We live in interesting times.

People of my generation remember that well -- though this only became known later. Nixon was anti-social, but he had a certain code of honor. Looking back, as much as I despised him, he did a couple of good things.

The felon is a sociopath, with less stability all too frequently ..... more often than the drunk Dick.

He tried to get operatives to break into the apartment of Arthur Bremer, who had just shot George Wallace, and plant Democratic literature.

However, Nixon seemed to respect social etiquette and observe manners when in public.

When sober, Nixon considered crimes as options, and it might be noted he was okay with expanding military operations into Cambodia and Laos. But he had a secret plan to end the Vietnam, that he kept to secret that it has never been identified.

The few times that he was rude and obnoxious in public had to have been someone else's fault. Than darned Dan Rather!

In one of his books, Rather discribes a break-in to his home during the plumbers' era of activities.
