Indiana Republican With Disabled Daughter Revolts on Redistricting After Trump's Slur: 'Words Have Consequences'

Indiana state Senator Mike Bohacek (R) publicly declared he will vote against President Donald Trump-backed redistricting efforts in his state as he raged against the president’s use of a slur Friday to insult Minnesota Governor Tim Walz (D).

Bohacek, a Republican from Michiana whose daughter has Down syndrome, said Trump’s Friday remark – using the word “retard” – crossed a personal line. The president hurled the slur in a late-night anti-immigration tirade during which he branded the Democrat “seriously retarded.”

Taking to Facebook, the lawmaker warned that “words have consequences” and he would be voting “NO” on redistricting efforts until Trump could prove his “policies and behavior deserve a congressional majority”:

Not worried about the mid terms at all. He is either completely senile or knows they will win by cheating.

The video of Trump rolling his eyes, flailing his arms and babbling insanely, "... ugh, I don't know what I said, ugh...I don't remember....." is all we need to know about HIS state of mind. If the wheels of Karma were ever to roll over Trump, he might soon have a stroke leaving him disabled to be mocked by his own reflection in the mirror. His lack of empathy is part of his twisted pathology. I thought he would have been rejected by voters for mocking that reporter in that way, but here we are.

I agree with the sentiment of one of the post s above. Republicans who don't like Trump are just feeling more emboldened to say it openly.

He is losing support and losing his hold on the party.

21. Mike Johnson set to huddle with Indiana Republicans amid redistricting fight

The meeting, ahead of next week’s session, represents an escalation of Johnson’s involvement in mid-cycle redistricting, a process driven by the White House: He has routinely said it’s an issue for individual states and one in which he has no direct involvement.

House Republicans are expected to talk with Johnson on a conference call at 1 p.m. Saturday before convening on Dec. 1.

A spokesperson for Johnson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

POLITICO reported last week that Johnson called GOP Indiana Senate President Pro Tempore Rodric Bray last Wednesday, after Bray, whose caucus has largely resisted redistricting, said Senate Republicans would not convene to advance new maps.

In the call, Johnson expressed the importance of holding Republicans’ thin majority in the House ahead of the midterms, according to Bray. Indiana Republicans are weighing redrawing the 1st and 7th congressional districts, potentially yielding Johnson two additional seats.

But earlier this week, Bray reversed course, saying his caucus would make a final decision on redistricting when they are expected to reconvene on Dec. 8.

Multiple Indiana Republicans close to the process, and granted anonymity by POLITICO to discuss a matter that has resulted in personal threats to their safety, said they believe the Senate is still a handful of votes away from having support for the matter.

Donald Trump’s nephew Fred Trump III alleges in a new book, excerpted for Time magazine, that in a private conversation about people with disabilities who require expensive care, his uncle said, “Maybe those kinds of people should just die.”

Donald Trump allegedly made a similar statement when discussing Fred Trump III’s own son, who has a KCNQ2 gene mutation that resulted in intellectual and developmental disabilities. The nephew writes that he was appalled by his uncle’s remarks and the implication that there is a whole group of people whose lives don’t matter. If it’s true that Donald Trump made these statements, I am appalled as well — partly because my 6-year-old son is one of those people.
