MI-13: Thanedar collects corporate PAC donations, while telling voters he doesn't
Washington ― Two-term U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar is soliciting donations to his reelection campaign by claiming he takes no money from billionaires or corporate political action committees. But he does.
The Detroit Democrat so far this year accepted contributions from at least three PACs with corporate ties: The Detroit-based utility DTE Energy Co. and defense contractors Honeywell International and General Dynamics, records show.
In the last two years, he took at least $24,500 from corporate PACs, including AT&T, Delta Airlines, General Motors Co., Home Depot, Pfizer and Southwest Airlines. He's previously accepted money from PACs linked to Google, UPS, Walmart, Verizon, Ford Motor Co., Toyota and defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
Thanedar's campaign has sent text messages to the contrary in recent weeks, saying: "We dont take billionaire money or corporate PAC checks. Our strength comes from the grassroots, from you. Can you chip in before midnight to help close the gap and hit our mid-month goal?"
