We just "cut the cord" as they say. Dropped our $200 per month cable tv for free tv: over the air antenna, and free movie appslike Tubi.
It's been great so far (about a month). I bought a Roku Ultra, and a Tablo DVR. The antenna goes into the Tablo and gives us 265 stations (we live in Los Angeles).
But last weekend, I noticed that there is very little NFL availableand Monday Night Football is non-existent unless you pay for an app.
There was a time, when Monday Night Football was over the air (non-digital) and FREE. Man, these corporations are friggin greedy.
Oh well, NFL is a very violent sport, maybe it's best I stop watching.

(65,558 posts)I know it used to be network tv.
As for there being no NFL on network tv, there are two network games on Thanksgiving this week and 4 games on this coming Sunday. At least where I am. I believe Thursday night football streams on Amazon Prime at least.
If you need more NFL than that, might want to get a sports package to stream on Roku.

(18,324 posts)Last night it was ESPN. Sometimes two MNF games in a night split between the two networks.
I know I have watched little football this year. Would rather be outside walking.

(75,477 posts)I believe your remembering wrongly.
The last 3 seasons MNF is on ESPN, with the local markets for the 2 teams on ABC. It's lije that this year too.
Early in each of the last 3 seasons, the NFL scheduled 2 Monday night games; one on ESPN the other on ABC.
So that hasn't changed the ladt 3 seasons.

(2,467 posts)We'll also usually get one or sometimes 2 other games on Sunday. Then SNF is always on OTA, but it's freaking Chris Collinsworth and OMG I hate his announcing. Not him, he seems like he's a great dude but just ... he's so freaking obsequious all night, it's like his whole job is to speak in ridiculous superlatives (esp. about whichever 'star' QB(s) are playing) and just generally state the obvious. Grrr.
Then IIF there's two MNF games, we'll usually get 1 of the 2 on ABC, but never if there's only 1 MNF game, then it's only on ESPN. I don't pay for ESPN but sometimes watch it at friends and go "man I wish Troy and Joe did SNF instead" lol.
I have to say though, the quality of the picture on OTA games is just OUTSTANDING, I'm just like I cannot believe this picture just comes through the air. You'd think for sure they're be a sacrifice on how it looks vs. streaming but there's NOT a noticeable difference (I know, it's all digital, derp, but it's a trip to me lol).
Then I have to also say I *want* dislike Tom Brady for some reason, but I just can't. He's like 2 years in the booth and he's already one of the best announcers, fairly easily. That lucky bastard is great at everything

(29,450 posts)Mike Tirico deserves better.
I can't stand Troy and Joe. I have never liked Joe Buck, but recently I have been really annoyed by Troy Aikman making absolutely inane comments after every play along the lines of "if he hadn't been clobbered behind the line of scrimmage he might have broken loose for a big play" or "if he had intercepted the ball he might have had a pick six!" It's like every play he outlines a different scenario if some great block or missed tackle hadn't occurred.
I agree about the video quality. I don't have Prime but I have seen the Prime broadcasts in bars and they are amateur hour compared to the networks. They seem to have about a tenth of the cameras and equipment and the video quality is bad. Not only that, but they don't pan out. Every view seems squeezed from the sides, when TVs couldn't show letterbox. And they have zero engagement with the fans. On the networks, the camera operators are really skilled at crowd shots. Prime doesn't seem to care. Their camera work is absolutely robotic.

(2,467 posts)And yeah, it's also CC's voice and the never shutting up parts. So I just find Troy and Joe much less annoying by contrast, but now that you mention their annoying aspects, I'll probably hone in on them and get annoyed now like you. So, thanks!

(13,372 posts)I cannot stand listening to Collinsworth, then my friend told me he was an excellent wide receiver and said to be a good guy, so I tried...but just can't get past his hype about certain players in the gamesand he seems to be wrong so much.
And I'm also not a Brady fan, but I think he's very good. But I kind of thought all along that he was going to be very good, because of his experience.
I really miss Madden. Loved watching games with that guy at the microphone helm.

(2,592 posts)Last night I switch to NBC only to see that now they are in a pissing contest with NBC so no game.
I went to the ESPN site and those bastards wouldn't post the score.
I fear my football days are also numbered.
Morning game at the pub. 4 beers (00)
1 small wings
Tip
That was 50 bucks for one game.
Yay team?

(1,229 posts)You can still watch 3-4 games on Sundays. I'm pretty sure that most Monday night football games have aired on ABC since the writers strikes a couple of years ago. Prior to 2006 the Sunday night game was exclusively on cable, so worst case scenario you swapped a game on Monday for one on Sunday over the air.
There are more games on streaming services now, but that's less than 2 games a week with Thursday nights, a handful of games played in Europe and a game played on Christmas. Even the Amazon prime game on Black Friday will stream for free to everyone.
But even when it was exclusively OTA, you were still only getting 3-4 games in your area.

(12,944 posts)I am a Niners fan and had to listen to the game last night on Sirius because it was not on my local ABC, we dropped cable many years ago, have antenna and no ESPN where it was on. I followed gamecast and watched a pretend ball go back and forth.
We can't afford the extra channels but sometimes will go to local Mexican restaurant to watch game. Last weekend Seahawks were on Fox instead of my team so I haven't seen them in awhile. I live in southern Oregon so they show western teams.

(9,717 posts)Yes, they are.
But, we let them do this without complaint and now they expect us to just pay or go away.
We used to put in the old football games into the Sega and let it do the 'self play' feature. We would then watch and bet on the game (nickel/dime/quarter) as well as other aspects (most yardage/longest pass... stuff like that). I guess we will have to start doing that again just to get to watch a game without going broke just to see it.

(18,036 posts)I do this with all the sports I tend to watch. Whether its football or baseball, which you have to pay to view which Im not going to do. I didnt even know baseball had switched to all pay to view.
But the worst offenders are Figure Skating. When youre trying to watch the performance and listening to the music to judge the performance for yourself. However, starting with Dick Button, Tara Lipensky and Johnny Weir they never shut up. I mute them because its non stop talk. On rare occasions I can find a YouTube feed where there are no talking heads, and every skater gets to perform. Back when I first started watching I played my own music which turned out really good.
Heres a rundown of pay to view sports that Im aware of
Figure Skating (broadcast tv will show extremely limited viewing and mostly US skaters)
Baseball
Football (broadcast tv will show a few games per week but not as many as they used to)
Not sure about other sports.
But my question is:
Why did these bigwigs decide to make the viewing public pay for watching?
Are advertisements not worth it?
Did they decide more profits for their shareholders?
Those sports pay to view sports packages are expensive. The viewing public will have to decide food on the table or pay to watch a game!

(10,842 posts)if you have a 5.1 speaker setup, sometimes muting the center channel works to shut up the announcers

(6,328 posts)The same networks will televise the three Thanksgiving Day games. Again, for free and over-the-air.
True, Monday night and Thursday night games do require ESPN and Amazon Prime, but there's still plenty of free football.
