Alarming story.
https://www.wired.com/story/young-people-are-tripping-on-benadryl-and-its-always-a-bad-time/
When used in high doses, diphenhydramine, an ingredient in Benadryl, functions as a deliriant, a hallucinogenic class of drugs, which appear to be becoming increasingly popular among young people for nonmedical purposes. Unlike psychedelics or other hallucinogens, theres no real potential for a good trip on a deliriant. According to the people I spoke to, every trip is bad, every trip is brutal, and thats the point.
In 2020, the Benadryl challenge gained traction on TikTok, daring participants to take doses of at least 12 Benadryl pills for an intense trip. The trend, which resurfaces every few years, drew attention to the psychoactive effects of deliriants. I saw a video about it on TikTok once, so I knew it could be used recreationally, one user tells me.
With little to no harm reduction information readily available about high levels of consumption, problems began to rise. In May 2020, three Texas teens were treated for Benadryl overdoses in just a week, one of whom was just 14 years old and took 14 pills. The 14-year-old recovered and returned home the next day. In August 2020, a 15-year-old died from a seizure after overdosing on the drug in Oklahoma. In September 2020, the FDA issued a warning for parents to hide and lock up their Benadryl supply, warning of the potential risk of heart problems, seizures, and, less commonly, comas and even death. Despite the warning, the trend seems to have persisted. In 2020, there were 4,618 cases reported to US Poison Centers for Benadryl usage; that number climbed to 5,960 in 2023, according to a study published in Pediatrics Open Science in August. Benadryl and deliriants in general have embedded themselves as staples on the fringes of the American youtha cheap and easy way to get fucked up. WIRED reached out to Benadryl manufacturer Kenvue for comment. A spokesperson for the company stated, This behavior is extremely concerning and dangerous, and encouraged consumers to carefully read and follow the instructions on the label and contact their health care professional should they have questions.
-snip-
The users I spoke to described a range of unpleasant symptoms including a dramatic increase in heart rate, nausea, breathlessness, dry mouth, and severe memory loss. Thats just if the trip goes well. But the fun doesnt stop there. Ryan Marino, a toxicologist and assistant professor at Case Western Reserve Universitys School of Medicine, says, Use of these central anticholinergics does cause amnesia (and impair memory formation) and so may certainly make people feel like they are developing dementia or having cognitive issues. John felt his neurocognitive function decaying firsthand, having had to drop his college chemistry class when he was taking Benadryl.

Much more at the link.
I'd never heard of this before. And if any drug-taking DUers think even for a second that this might be an interesting trip, you'd better reread the next-to-last paragraph quoted above.
I'm posting this for any DUers who might have noticed friends or family suddenly taking Benadryl when they'd never seemed to have allergies.

(21,320 posts)I ask him why he needed the information because I have been taking them for 20 years because of my sinuses.
He told me they can be used as hallucinogen drugs by young people.

Ti's possible that Benadryl might work for
me as a placebo effect because I expect it to.

(16,643 posts)Lot's of good videos online. The spores are legal to buy. They don't contain any psilocybin, so their perfectly legal to possess.
Once you get the hang of it, it's fairly straight forward to grow them and the added bonus is you know where they came from.

(2,476 posts)Benedryl at super high doses produces delirium, which is distinguished from psychedelic hallucination because they do not arise from the serotonin system, but rather the acetylcholine system. They are supposed to be intensely unpleasant - with oddly consistently imagery. People tend to experience elongated body shapes, shadows, and articulated joints like in insects.
I find benedryl unpleasant at low doses, but I have taken excessive Nyquil (Doxylamine, different drug similar effect) that has given me a really unpleasant fugue dream state.
Overuse of anticholinergic antihistamines like benedryl is also under evaluation for increased risk of dementia and neurodegeneration.

(19,024 posts)That's something I never understood about addicts, or "recreational" users who do stuff and then admit it wasn't fun.
Decades ago I did my share of risky behavior, including a dab of this or that; but I can't remember ever consuming something that I didn't believe would be pleasant. (Mostly I stuck to pot; there were a couple "one time" experiences with other stuff but there was always something wrong and the high didn't seem worth it.)

(28,344 posts)...when I was little (eventually quit) and I find the smell utterly disgusting.
If I were ever to try marijuana, it would have to be in a funny brownie, as I couldn't possibly smoke it.

(2,476 posts)I've seen some poor friends curl into a fetal position because of how edibles work. It is near impossible to get too much weed by smoking, but edibles you can get dosages that are uncomfortably high without knowing it.
Especially when the edibles taste good.
Lochloosa
(16,643 posts)It is a totally different high and in my case, hard to regulate.
Haven't smoked in 20+ years, so I tried them a couple of times. Not for me.

(28,344 posts)...and altho I'm curious, and it's legal in Illinois, it still feels vaguely criminal to me, so I'll likely never experience it.

(13,323 posts)I was on a psych unit in the early 80s back then they had rooms set aside for smokers. Since all the interesting people were in there I was in there too sometimes.
What was the big deal about cigarettes? I wondered because everyone in my family smoked but me and everyone in the unit was asking for them giving them out for a buck.
I was curious to try it. I asked 3 people offered I had the choice of some brand I didnt know, a Newport or a Marlboro. I picked the Marlboro. They found it amusing I held it like a joint.
First puff it tasted horrendous. Second puff it made my throat hurt and my lungs itch deep inside .By the 3rd puff I had enough. This sucked ass.
I wanted to get out of the room and go lie down I was quickly becoming miserable. As I walked to my room I got something similar to tunnel vision. It was unnerving.
I laid down and the nausea hit. Drooling I was scared I was gonna puke and the dizziness and weird vision didnt help me feel confident I would make it to the toilet.
However being emetiphobic I know just how to breathe a certain way to control nausea .I laid there closed my eyes breathed and waited until it was over.
That was my one and only time a cigarette touched my lips.

(19,024 posts)The social benefits outweighed any discomfort. But the discomfort was objectively mild, compared to what is described in this article.
After 6 months of regular cigarette smoking, I no longer found the benefits outweighing the costs. It took me 2+ years to break free of the habit that had already formed. That was an important life lesson - but not one I would recommend anyone undertake on purpose.

(4,897 posts)please dont restrict Benadryl.
I use it for occasional bouts of allergies and insomnia, I take one before vaccines to help reduce the local swelling in the injection area, and always when traveling staying in hotels that are dog-friendly.
I remember when a popular decongestant was moved behind the counter when people started using it to make methamphetamine IIRC.
So sick of things getting harder because some people act like idiots.

(65,813 posts)It is also an antihistamine and used more for anxiety. Both have their uses when used properly.
mr715
(2,476 posts)It is primarily an antihistamine in the same family as benedryl and doxylamine. It produces the same sorta weird fuzzy drowsiness than is different from other sleep meds. I've always found it unpleasant, and it shuts me down for the whole next day.
But if I have allergies and anxiety, hey, it works.
I become incredibly dizzy on hydroxyzine.
I was prescribed it for anxiety and definitely worked in reverse as I was totally dizzy to the point of severe anxiety!
mvd
(65,813 posts)It makes me a little drowsy/sleepy but not dizzy. I take a small dosage. Cant imagine using these meds to get a high.

(1,229 posts)Benadryl is my go-to for allergies. I know some people have side effects but this is the only allergy pill I've tried that doesn't have any for me. I recently had work done in my home that created lots of dust. Just a few Benadryls over a couple of days got me through that. A couple of Benadryls and and aspirin cure a sinus headache in just half an hour. If they take this away, I'm going to be in a world of hurt even though I only take them now and then.

(12,124 posts)Was kinda fine before the 2 rescues. Now, because I can't resist snuggling or kick them out my bed, yep, 2 benadryl around 5:30am and 2 about 9pm.
Doc put me on Claritin, pff,no good
At least the benadryl works a little. Still have watering eyes, itching ears, etc... but the snuggling is totally worth it
I used to take sudafed, it worked better, but pharmacy actcls like you're trying to get an opioid. Driver's license, signature... lol I just want less snot, watering eyes and itching ears
