This is an old friend whose husband is a hard-right MAGAT who believes in every conspiracy theory and of course, blocked me on Facebook. Im hoping that these Republicans in Chicago and Illinois are getting pissed off. This is the message she liked:
If you see whats going on in the country right now, specifically Chicago and Portland, and you dont recognize how the actions of ICE are unconstitutional, youre so far removed from reality.
Saying ICE is only targeting violent criminals is bullshit when their raids are on schools, churches, hospitals, workplaces, and apartment buildings where children and women are dragged from their beds in the dead of night and their apartments ransacked.
If an officer seizes you without probable cause, uses excessive force, arrests a U.S. citizen as if they were a non‑citizen, or violates free‑speech or due‑process rights, those are constitutional violations.
What is the probable cause for my arrest is not enough to keep you from being arrested.
I do not concent to a search is not enough to keep you from being arrested.
IM AN AMERICAN CITIZEN IS NOT ENOUGH TO KEEP YOU FROM BEING ARRESTED!
I love my country, and Im heartbroken because I do not recognize my country. These actions are despicable, and anyone who supports this shit should be ashamed of themselves. You are on the wrong side of history.

(50,035 posts)they claim to oppose tyranny. Well, ICE is committing tyranny every day. They've arrested and detained plenty of American citizens, with the right documents as proof.

sidewalk were you wanted to walk. Hell throw them in the back of U-Haul vans
for a couple of hours for resisting arrest.

(1,091 posts)He (and Leonard Leo) should be dragged out of his bed in the dead-of-night and be stripped of his identity and renditioned to an undisclosed location for the duration. (And made to share "accommodations" with the Big Baby.)
His crimes made ALL these crimes necessary.

No man has done more in recent years to undermine the functioning of the US government. He has been the epitome of unprincipled leadership, the triumph of tactics in pursuit of short-term power." -- Dana Milbank

(3,476 posts)that some of the victims of the brutality are people who were trumpvoters. And good job for speaking out. Your story is why it matters. We won't sway the cult, but the cult-adjacent and otherwise chronically uninformed wishy-washy "independents" need the truth shoved in their faces.

(1,634 posts)There are some that I don't waste time with, but I don't write them off. They choose to have blinders on, but one day they could choose to believe the opposite -- not because they have seen the light, but because they get tired of the same stuff after a while.
I have a friend -- and I actually do consider him a friend and colleague -- who was just impossible a year ago. I had him pegged as a hard core MAGA person because he criticized everything about Biden, Harris, and most other Dems. However, over time, I came to realize that his real philosophy was Any Rand libertarianism.
Well, he is smart enough (he has a PhD in Physics) to recognize that Trump is really bad news for liberties and especially for the 1st Amendment. These days, he barely mentions Dems and he is red hot in his hatred for Trump and the whole MAGA scene.
That doesn't mean he would ever vote for a Dem, but at least it is a case of "an enemy of my enemy is a friend. IN my case, I said we have continued to be friends, and he has been a lot easier for me to take these days. I support most of his arguments about the first amendment and personal freedoms, and I think maybe he has gained a little respect for those of us to were much quicker to recognize the existential threat that Trump poses.
