The Senators walked over to the White House...

...and told Mr Nixon in no uncertain terms, that he must resign or he would be impeached. They were Republicans. Unlike the quislings now in power, they cared about their country and they had backbones. It would be a long crawl for these invertebrates that now call themselves "Republicans". They are a disgrace to America.

But, we have reached a similar point in history at this very moment, in my opinion. We need 3 or 4 Senators with a love for our country and our Constitution to take the short walk to the White House. And they need to tell the criminal now occupying the Presidency that he needs to step down immediately. He has become an existential threat to our freedoms and he must go. It is a matter of national security of the highest urgency.

Even though I deeply disagreed with Nixon, Nixon truly loved this country.

Trump doesn't. So no appeal to his love for the country or democracy will have any impact on Trump

1) Nixon was not a well balanced psychological specimen, but he was not the completely unhinged delusional maniacal monster that currently occupies the oval office.

2) The Republican Congress in 1974 was an independent entity. They were a different kind of Republican. And I assume many of them were not being controlled by threats and kompromat.

3) Nixon was (mostly) surrounded by mostly regular operatives within the party. He was not flanked by the likes of Stephen Miller and Russell Vought egging him on. His cabinet was not completely made up of incompetent sycophantic sleazes.

I think what we need is a few brave and (somewhat) ethical Republican Congress critters to start voting with Dems.

that he would be convicted in the Senate and removed from office. At that point, there were 77 solid votes for conviction.

…after they had done a head count and found that Nixon didn’t even have close to enough Republican votes to stave off conviction in the Senate upon his certain impeachment by the House.

Can you imagine any scenario where Trump wouldn’t keep a core of loyalists totaling 33 Republican Senators?

the tapes emerged, proving that Nixon had been right in the middle of the burglary and cover-up. They did it, not out of patriotism, but to save their own asses.

Scream at them and tell them he’s in charge and get the fuck out.

And like true repuke fashion they would nod yes and walk away with their tails between their legs
