Trump's Youth Support Has Faded. These 11 Young Trump Voters Explain Why. - NYT

NYT - Gift Link

Over the summer, some pollsters found declining support for President Trump among young people.

In a Pew survey in August, for instance, 69 percent of Trump voters under 35 said they approved of his performance. That’s a very high number, but it’s a significant dip from the 92 percent who had said the same earlier in the year.

For the latest installment of the America in Focus project, we talked to 11 of these voters — Trump voters in their late 20s and early 30s who told us beforehand that they either somewhat disapproved of his performance or had mixed feelings about it — to understand their specific concerns.

Many participants don’t see the economic improvement they hoped for, something that is particularly pertinent to, as one participant mentioned, the working-class Americans who voted for Mr. Trump. Some said changes were needed but the ones being made were too aggressive or focused on the wrong things, like tariffs. A couple were unhappy with the way the United States is handling the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, or the way immigration policy is being carried out.

These voters still don’t think much of Democrats, however — and they had interesting theories about why more voters in their 20s selected Republicans in 2024 than in the last few elections.

Good luck recruiting these folks Dems.

HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA

The job market is putrid for the young right now and nothing Trump is doing will improve it. These are the salad days of the presidency. The worst is yet to come.

I hate to sound all " You kids git off my lawn" and old fart, but there is some truth to the notion that a lot of youth in this country has been raised in a bubble of their social media, and only have half a clue about how the world works and at what sort of time scale.
They, like the youth of my day, put a lot more trust and enthusiasm in what people say than the history of what they did.
Makes for all sorts of confusion, disappointment, and eventually cynicism when they realize their role models and influencers may have lied to them for profit.

values "virality", blatant idiocy, and tasteless humor.

They got what they wanted.

In fact, what "works" on social media for them is the opposite of what works in real life. Preparation, focus, skill and quality (YMMV on these). And what REALLY works for the owners of social media are hypnosis, psychological baiting and exploitation.

And then, there's reality.

When you look at The Matrix for outside.

4. So, are they gonna listen to us next time around or are they gonna let themselves get conned by Republicans again?

Democrats aren't perfect -- no one is -- but unless you are rich and/or full of bigoted hate, Republicans offer absolutely nothing to you. If you think otherwise, you need to stop buying into their propaganda and brush up on your political history.

6. Depends on whether our nominee is a white man or charismatic non white man

or a female . If a Clinton or Obama type we will get their vote.

If a woman less so and even more less so if it's a non white woman.

If the economy is like 2008 we have more chance with all of the options.

Also if a Republican nominee has some decency they are less likely to support them. Vance is not decent but he is boring so they might just not vote.

In all of these cases it has nothing to do with the actual policy positions of the candidates.

leadership. They glum onto TSF cuz he’s aggressive and assertive. Dems need an equal opposite. I like Newsom cuz he’s assertive; doesn’t shy away from liberal values.

Did they vote Trump for the lulz?

Or because it's what Joe Rogan told them to do?

Maybe a really funny TikTok video about libtards?
