False statement charge against Comey appears to center on Hillary Clinton email probeThe alleged leak to the media that underpins the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey appears to relate to the 2016 investigation concerning Hillary Clinton, rather than the separate 2016 FBI investigation of Donald Trump and Russian election meddling.
Prosecutors say in the indictment they believe Comey had authorized an anonymous leak to the press about an FBI investigation. The indictment then accuses him of lying under oath to the Senate in 2020 when he was asked whether he had authorized a leak, and he testified he hadnt.
But officials and people involved in the case tell CNN the false statement charge appears to center on alleged leaks for news articles about the FBIs investigation of Hillary Clinton and her use of a private email server.
For Trump, Comeys handling of the investigation into him and his campaign has been at the top of the agenda. He has accused Comey of being corrupt and of damaging his first term by leaking against him. That the two counts Comey faces may be instead about alleged leaks related to the Clinton investigation represents the irony of the latest developments. Clinton has long accused Comey of damaging her campaign and swinging the election to Trump.

...this report dances around the fuckery staring us right in the face of this manipulative administration believing they can splinter off support from Democrats based on their antipathies and objections to Comey and the role he played in advantaging Trump in that election.
To not see this would require believing the DOJ packed with Trump sycophants gives a shit about Comey lying about Hillary and disadvantaging her in that election.
This is a cynical, but easy challenge to Democrats to see if their principles about Trump's corrupt use of the federal government against people he opposes politically will bend to cheer on that illegal exercise against their own political foe.
It's actually the best case scenario for Democrats because, it's an opportunity to demonstrate that we will defend even the rights of our political rivals, or those we politically disagree with, against the federal government acting precipitously and personally against them.

Democratic lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee say six pages of records from Jeffrey Epsteins estate show that the late financier was friends with some of the most powerful and wealthiest men in the world.
The pages from Epsteins schedule show he was in touch with prominent figures like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Steve Bannon and Peter Thiel. There is no evidence those people knew about how Epstein was sexually abusing teenage girls.
Prince Andrew also flew with Epstein from New Jersey to Florida, according to a flight log released by the lawmakers.
The records redacted the names of victims, and the committee plans to release more once those are redacted as well.

Oversight Democrats Release Third Batch of Documents from Jeffrey Epstein Estate, Includes Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Steve Bannon, Prince Andrew Mentions
September 26, 2025
Press Release
Washington, D.C. Today, Democrats on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform released partial records from the third batch of documents produced by the Jeffrey Epstein Estate, which includes phone message logs, copies of flight logs and manifests for aircrafts, copies of financial ledgers, and Epsteins daily schedule. The documents produced to the public include mentions of possible contact between Jeffrey Epstein and prominent figures like Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, Steve Bannon, and Prince Andrew. Further review of the documents, which were redacted to protect the identity of victims, is ongoing.
It should be clear to every American that Jeffrey Epstein was friends with some of the most powerful and wealthiest men in the world. Every new document produced provides new information as we work to bring justice for the survivors and victims. Oversight Democrats will not stop until we identify everyone complicit in Epsteins heinous crimes. Its past time for Attorney General Bondi to release all the files now, said Oversight Spokesperson Sara Guerrero.
Within documents of Epsteins schedule, there is evidence that Thiel and Bannon had scheduled meetings with Epstein, as well as evidence of a pending trip by Elon Musk to Epsteins island. Prince Andrew is listed as a passenger on Epsteins aircraft, with financial disclosures providing possible evidence of payments from Epstein to masseuses on behalf of an individual identified as Andrew. Extensive redactions have been made to protect victims as Committee investigators continue to analyze the new documents. This is a rolling production, and the Committee expects to receive more documents in response to these and other requests.
In the third batch, the Oversight Committee received 8,544 documents responsive to the Committees subpoena from August. The following was received:
Phone Message Logs from 2002-2005, which were produced previously in litigation
Copies of flight logs and flight manifests for aircraft, including helicopters, that Mr. Epstein owned, rented, leased, operated or used from 1990-2019
Copies of ledgers reflecting transactions recorded as cash transactions for Mr. Epstein and business entities. These documents were previously shown to Committee staff at in camera review.
Epsteins daily schedules between 2010 and 2019

Plus, anything shithole does, most are horrible, as he continues to terrorize the USA.

(170,297 posts)Comey was an asshole and attacked Hillary Clinton when he announced that there would be no charges on the email issue. Under DOJ rules, when the decision not to proceed is made, there is NO announcement. Comey was an asshole and held a press conference where he attacked Clinton.
This press conference was so offensive and against DOJ policy that the DOJ inspector general called Comey out.
The DOJ's inspector general agreed that Comey "violated long-standing Department practice and protocol by, among other things, criticizing Clintons uncharged conduct," and that Comey "usurped the authority of the Attorney General." https://oig.justice.gov/node/640

(92,665 posts)...so defending against an individual being subject to this unjust action of using the weight and power of the federal government against a political or personal adversary, enemy, or dissident will demonstrate that the objections aren't just a partisan political defense of Democrats or Democratic party interests.
This antipathy or objection about the consequence of his actions in that election cannot be assuaged or remedied by approving of, encouraging, or tolerating Trump perpetrating the very abuses we ostensibly object to against even this political rival of our own.
Moreover, it doesn't take much reasoning to conclude that Trump has likely put this Democratic antagonist forward for this abuse of power, cynically hoping Democrats will stoop to his level, acquiesce to this because of our own resentments, and absolve him of his dirty deed.
