Trump signs memorandum targeting 'left-wing terrorism'

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum marshalling federal law enforcement to investigate “domestic terrorism and organized political violence,” which he has blamed on the left as he ramps up efforts to target political opposition.

“This is the first time in American history that there is an all of government effort to dismantle left-wing terrorism," White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller said during a Sept. 25 event at the White House.

FBI Director Kash Patel said law enforcement would focus on who is funding such groups, saying he plans to "follow the money."

"We are properly going to chase them down like the domestic terrorists that they are," Patel said.

1. MaddowBlog-'There will be others': Trump eyes additional targets after securing Comey indictment

After orchestrating the charges against the former FBI director, does the president expect to prosecute other foes? Of course he does.

After orchestrating the charges against James Comey, does Trump expect to prosecute other political enemies? Of course he does.

“There will be others,” he boasted. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

Now, the president has successfully orchestrated the indictment of one of his political enemies, former FBI Director James Comey, in an unusually brazen example of corrupting the criminal justice system. What are the odds that the Republican will feel satiated and curtail his revenge campaign?

Roughly zero. NBC News reported:

As he departed the White House for the Ryder Cup tournament, Trump was asked by a reporter who ‘the next person on your list in this retribution’ will be now that Comey has been indicted. ‘It’s not a list. I think there will be others. I mean they’re corrupt,’ Trump said. ‘These were corrupt radical left Democrats because Comey was essentially a — he’s worse than a Democrat.’

Obviously, this was largely gibberish. Neither the president nor those around him have ever presented credible evidence of his Democratic foes being “corrupt.” On the contrary, those looking for evidence of actual corruption should look no further than Trump’s charges against Comey.

Q: Now that Comey has been indicted, who is the next person on your list?

TRUMP: It's not a list, but I think they'll be others. I mean, they're corrupt. These were corrupt radical left Democrats.

.......The prosecution is advancing anyway because Trump fired the prosecutor who insisted on following the law, ignored the career prosecutors who did their job, dismissed the concerns of his sycophantic attorney general and used an unqualified loyalist, just days into her tenure, to exact revenge against a former ally who dared to cross him.

MSNBC’s Ken Dilanian reported that within the Justice Department, many insiders believe this is “among the worst abuses” in the history of the institution.

“There will be others” suggests that we ought to append a caveat: this is among the worst abuses so far. Because Comey is hardly the only, or the last, person on Trump’s enemies list.

2. "Trespass" and "civil disorder" are declared "terrorist acts" by this executive memo

From the "Scenes from a Slow Civil War" substack by Jeff Sharlet:

It’s critical to name this bait-&-switch: Using real acts of violence by a handful of unaffiliated individuals to launch an attack on the much greater strength of liberal / left “organized structures, networks, entities, organizations, [and] funding sources.” This isn’t about a manhunt to stop the next murderer before he can shoot; it’s a “new… strategy,” the deconstruction by state power of far less dramatic efforts to build the very step-by-step systemic rule-of-law resistance that is the opposite of violence.

Note the last item on the list: “predicate actions.” What might be the dark “predicate actions” for the donations of liberal billionaires George Soros and Reid Hoffman—both name-checked by Trump Thursday—to efforts such as MoveOn, America Votes, Media Matters, and and peer-to-peer microlending? Capital Research Center, the far right think tank whose “research” the White House is leaning on for the Terror Memo, cites in particular Soros’ support for the Sunrise Movement. Put that next to Trump’s insistence that climate change is a “con job,” and you begin to see how simply naming the facts of fire and flood and heat deaths could come to be construed as “terrorism” subject to investigation.
...
The following instruction expands the definition of “terrorist acts” from doxing and violent threats—both of which could reasonably construed as such, and both of which have been pursued by powerful regime allies—to include also “trespass” and “civil disorder”:

The Attorney General shall issue specific guidance that ensures domestic terrorism priorities include politically motivated terrorist acts such as organized doxing campaigns, swatting, rioting, looting, trespass, assault, destruction of property, threats of violence, and civil disorder. This guidance shall also include an identification of any behaviors, fact patterns, recurrent motivations, or other indicia common to organizations and entities that coordinate these acts in order to direct efforts to identify and prevent potential violent activity.

These terms bring under the “terrorism” umbrella a nonviolent action as simple as, say, sitting in front of an ICE entrance. Or, for that matter, just chanting from the sidewalk.
