Im Till Eckert, a ProPublica reporter. For the past 2 weeks, Ive been going to the same NY immigration courthouse.
Nearly every time, I see ICE agents arresting immigrants. Today, a woman was slammed to the ground after begging officials not to take her husband away.

2/ I stayed by Monica Moreta-Galarza, who was seeking asylum with her family, until she was discharged from the hospital.
Over [in Ecuador], they beat us there too. I didnt think Id come here to the United States and the same thing would happen to me, she said in Spanish.

3/ These sorts of actions were outside the norm historically for ICE agents.
Yet under Trumps second term, immigration courts have shifted from being seen as relatively safe venues into places where immigrants face the risk of surveillance, arrest and sometimes even violence.

4/ Congressman Dan Goldman promised to follow up on the incident, which he called an example of secret police officers who are attacking our communities with excessive violence and they just think that they can do it with impunity, because nobody is holding them accountable.

5/ The Trump administration has continually escalated its immigration crackdown. And the oversight arm that would typically keep DHS in check, its Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, was dismantled in DOGEs sweep:

6/ This isnt the first time ProPublica has reported on immigration enforcement under Trump 2.0 acting in unprecedented ways.
In July, my colleagues documented ~50 incidents of officers shattering car windows to make arrests.

7/ ICE has previously said its officers use only the level of force that is objectively reasonable.

(429 posts)continues their critical reporting on this disgusting reign of torment and terror. I think they were instrumental during Drumpfs first term, in getting the child separations widely covered when they released the heart wrenching recording of the crying children in detention. It is heartbreaking to think of how many lives are torn apart and horrifying to think of how many people are willing to carry out such cruelty. Thanks for posting this thread. As hard as it is to witness, it is imperative that we know the truth and can remain clear eyed and committed to resist.
