I was training some attorneys who were going to do voter protection at a downtown law firm when the first letter came out. One of my firm's associates was taking this course and was making a funny face during my class. Later I was shocked to hear what Comey did in that it was a DOJ cardinal rule that you take no steps close to an election.

These letters got trump elected in 2016
I stand with Comey in this matter but I still have very strong feelings about this idiot.

(170,303 posts)I have some very strong feelings about Comey.
Comey broke a good number of DOJ/FBI rules. First, Comey did a press conference about the Clinton investigation/email server after the DOJ determined no crime had been committed. Comey broke DOJ rules by discussing this matter and attacking Hillary even though the FBI/DOJ determined that there were no laws broken and there was no indictment. The FBI/DOJ is not supposed to discuss any matter where there is no indictment. The Inspector General later found that Comey broke DOJ rules in that press conference.
The above letters also violated DOJ/FBI rules. Comey is the reason why trump was elected in 2016

Wayne Barrett did some good reporting on the issue, before he died.

Comey is a republican, like every FBI director, ever. But the NY field office dictated the timing of the letters.

(170,303 posts)Comey was an asshole and attacked Hillary Clinton when he announced that there would be no charges on the email issue. Under DOJ rules, when the decision not to proceed is made, there is NO announcement. Comey was an asshole and held a press conference where he attacked Clinton.
This press conference was so offensive and against DOJ policy that the DOJ inspector general called Comey out.
The DOJ's inspector general agreed that Comey "violated long-standing Department practice and protocol by, among other things, criticizing Clintons uncharged conduct," and that Comey "usurped the authority of the Attorney General." https://oig.justice.gov/node/640
