Democratic special election win makes life even harder for Republicans on Capitol Hill
Adelita Grijalvas victory in Arizona doesnt just narrow the GOPs majority in the House, it also makes disclosure of the Epstein files more likely.

Once sworn in, Grijalva will be Arizonas first-ever Latina congresswoman, and shell narrow the GOP majority in the U.S. House: Republicans will hold 219 seats to the Democrats 214, with two vacancies remaining.
Also of interest was the congresswoman-elects margin of victory: Last fall, Kamala Harris carried this Tucson-area district by 22 points, but based on the latest vote tallies, Grijalva appears to have won this weeks special election by nearly 40 points.
That level of Democratic over-performance, which has been common in elections throughout the country this year, is what should worry Republican officials as much as the defeats.
But as Grijalva prepares to take the oath of office on Capitol Hill, theres another dimension to this that will add to GOP leaders headaches.
A bipartisan pair of lawmakers Republican Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California have spearheaded a pending discharge petition to force disclosure of the Jeffrey Epstein files, currently being held back by Donald Trumps Justice Department. Proponents of the effort are currently one member short of 218 signatures, which would trigger a process House Speaker Mike Johnson would be largely powerless to stop.

(13 posts)Grijalva didn't just flip a seat she crushed it with a nearly 40-point landslide. That kind of overperformance is the political equivalent of an earthquake, and the aftershocks are already being felt on the Hill.
Not only does this tighten the GOP's grip on the House to a threadbare margin (219-214), but it could finally push the Epstein files into daylight and that is what Republicans are really scared of. One more signature and the discharge petition becomes unstoppable.
Arizona just sent a Latina congresswoman to Washington and maybe, just maybe, a tidal wave of truth with her.
Game on.

(6,638 posts)The special election was due to the death of the Raúl Grijalva in the spring. The winner, Adelita Grijalva is his daughter. It's a safe blue district, but her overperformance is still very, very impressive.

(7,535 posts)It was an open seat previously held by her father who died earlier this year.

But it will not get the Epstein files released. The discharge petition will now get the final signature it needed to force it to the floor of the House for a vote. Assuming it passes (not a guarantee since it depends on Boebert, Greene & Mace following through and voting for the bill - they are not to be trusted), it then needs to be passed by the Senate. I guess that's possible, but unlikely. If it does pass the Senate, then it goes to Trump to sign which he is guaranteed not to do.
So while this is significant and will increase the pressure to get the files released, it will NOT actually get them released.

(6,638 posts)It'll force senate republicans go to on record refusing to support the release, and that can be tied as an anchor around their necks in the midterms.
