Fact check: Will health insurance premiums spike by 75% if Republicans don't extend ACA subsidies?

The claim: House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, D-Mass., the second-highest ranking House Democrat, said in a Sept. 12 X post, "Republicans are spiking health insurance premiums by 75% for everyday Americans" if they don't extend the enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., used the same figure Sept. 9. And AHIP, an insurance industry group, also cited the 75% figure in an article in which it urged passage of subsidy extensions.

PolitiFact ruling: If the Republican-controlled Congress does not extend Affordable Care Act enhanced subsidies before they expire at the end of this year, enrollees would have to pay more.

KFF analysis of federal data found that the average increase in out-of-pocket coverage cost would be 79%, with state-by-state average increases ranging from 49% to 195%.

Many will not be able to afford the new rates and will therefore be added to the estimated 7.5 million additional uninsured people who will lose Medicaid under the MAGA Murder Budget.

And with more uninsured, hospitals -- particularly already struggling hospitals that provide emergency services -- either shift the cost to the rest of us somehow,, close their emergency services (where uninsured people end up) or even close their doors entirely.

And this is not to mention the devastating effect the massive Medicaid cuts will have on long term/senior care systems.

In a recent poll, health care was "top of mind" for a very small percentage. That can and must change, but it will require people making NOISE.

Anti-MAGA electeds and leaders need to start hammering on the consequences to EVERONE. It is not just "low income people" losing their insurance. The ripple effects are serious. Particularly in rural areas where health care delivery is already seriously failing the public.

That is 1/3 of my monthly income after taxes. I can not afford to live.

The greedy sadists' agenda is "bankrupt then kill" Americans.

The only dim light is if a govt shutdown over healthcare increasing costs is successful.

I am a realist and I have no hope.

Robert Redford was lucky.
