MI-GOV: Snyder (R) pours cold water on Duggan's (I) independent bid for governor

Count former Gov. Rick Snyder as skeptical of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan's independent bid for governor in 2026, even as a growing cadre of Snyder's Republican loyalists are getting on the Duggan bandwagon.

Snyder and former U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow were asked at the Citizens Research Council of Michigan's annual dinner in Novi last Wednesday night whether it's time for a new political party. The answer ended up reflecting a division between the former governor and some of his trusted advisers and officials over the Duggan candidacy.

"Has the time come for a new party based on unification and a solutions-oriented approach to quality of life issues?" journalist Stephen Henderson asked.

Henderson, who moderated a discussion with Snyder and Stabenow, said the question came from the audience.
